SYLMAR CRUSHES CANOGA PARK; `INTENSE' SPARTANS FORCE 6 TURNOVERS : SYLMAR 51 CANOGA PARK 8.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

All week, Sylmar wanted somebody to hear it. It needed somebody to understand that its eight-point, squeak-by victory over Valley Pac-8 Conference rival Canoga Park did not show the real Spartans.

On Friday, in the first round of the City Section 4-A playoffs, the Spartans made their point loud and clear.

With an intensity Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said his team hadn't possessed all season, the Spartans dismantled dis·man·tle

and confused by the Spartans defense. The half ended 28-0, and the Hunters never recovered.

``You saw a different team out here tonight,'' Engilman said. ``The defense was as intense as I've seen it.''

The No. 4 seed Spartans (10-1) forced six turnovers on the night, including three interceptions by safety Shaun Avalos, the last of which he took 75 yards for a touchdown for the game's final score with 1:08 left.

It was Avalos' second three-interception game of the season - he had three against Grant last month.

``We should have done this two weeks ago,'' he said. ``Last time we waited, this time we attacked.''

The offense did its part. Errol Bowen rushed for a game-high 103 yards and a second-quarter 3-yard touchdown that gave Sylmar a 28-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Noah Albiston came off the bench to complete 8 of 13 passes for 84 yards and a score.

Despite the dominance of the Spartans' defense - they led the area schools in yards allowed, giving up 154.6 per game entering Friday - the penalties continued to cloud an otherwise perky perk·y

Sylmar finished with 17 penalties for 145 yards. It conspired with 68 yards worth of penalties against Canoga Park to make the contest last better than three hours.

The longevity longevity (lŏnjĕv`ĭtē), term denoting the length or duration of the life of an animal or plant, often used to indicate an unusually long life.  resulted in some confusion. After the Hunters' only score, the two teams lined up the wrong way on the kickoff. It took more than a minute for all parties involved to figure it out.

It was that kind of night for the Hunters, who avoided the shutout Not to be confused with Shootout.

In team sports, in American English, a shutout (a clean sheet in soccer) refers to a game in which one team prevents the opposing team from scoring. While possible, they are highly improbable in some sports, such as basketball.
when backup quarterback John Hernandez found John Laungnam on a touchdown pass from 26-yards out with 10:12 remaining.

It was a brief glimpse of offense from the Hunters, which were playing without 1,000-yard rusher Junior Galvan, who was declared ineligible in·el·i·gi·ble

``I'm sure (losing Galvan) hurt them, he was a good ballplayer,'' Engilman said.
