LANCASTER - A restaurant-supply company will complete an expansion of its new Lancaster distribution center this spring, more than doubling its operation to 230,000 square feet and setting the stage for job growth, company officials said.

SYGMA Network Inc., a subsidiary of the Fortune 500 company SYSCO SYSCO Systems and Services Company , expects to complete the expansion of its distribution center near Avenue G and 50th Street East by April 1. The company started construction of a 110,000-square-foot center last April, but decided to expand almost as soon as the facility was completed last fall.

``We are expecting to continue to grow at our facility,'' said Jim Stencel, company vice president.

The company, which started its Lancaster operations in December, employs about 120 workers. Within a year the company expects to grow to 220, said Karla Bulluck, human resources The fancy word for "people." Eventually the operation will grow to about 350 workers in Lancaster.

Thus far, the company has received more than 3,220 applications.

``Not only did we have the quantity (of applicants), but we had the quality,'' Bulluck said.

The company's main need at this point is truck drivers. The company has 59 drivers now, but will need between 100 to 110, Bulluck said.

The company acquired the site for the distribution center from the city's Redevelopment Agency for $871,200.

The project will be the third in Lancaster's Fox Field Industrial Corridor between the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. The construction of the commercial and industrial buildings is being done ``on spec'' - constructed on speculation that a company will be interested, rather than tailor-made for specific tenants. Economic development officials said it is a welcome sight, because lack of industrial space has hampered efforts to draw businesses to the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region.
