SYBASE IANYWHERE COLLABORATES WITH ALLIANCE FOR UWB.

Sybase iAnywhere is collaborating with WiMedia Alliance (WiMedia Alliance, Inc., San Ramon, CA, www.wimedia.org) A membership organization founded in 2002 that is devoted to the development of short-range, ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission.  member firms including Artimi and Staccato Communications to offer ultra-wide band (UWB (Ultra-WideBand) A wireless technology that uses less power and provides higher speed than 802.11 Wi-Fi networks or first-generation Bluetooth products. UWB is expected to provide wireless video transmission for home theater systems, cable TV, auto safety and ) based Bluetooth(R) and Wireless USB The wireless version of the universal serial bus (USB). Using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, wireless USB is designed to provide the same 480 Mbits/sec data rate as USB 2.0 within two meters (6.6 ft.) or 110 Mbps within 10 meters (33 ft.).  embedded drivers to market for consumer electronics, PC peripherals, and mobile devices. As a member of the WiMedia Alliance, Sybase iAnywhere collaborates with other WiMedia member companies to develop specifications, certification tests, and educational programs.

WiMedia(R) is the de-facto standard radio platform for ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless networking See wireless network. . With efficient power consumption and high data rates, WiMedia UWB has been selected by the Bluetooth SIG and the USB Implementers Forum The USB Implementers Forum, USB-IF, is a non-profit organisation to promote and support the Universal Serial Bus. Its main activities are the promotion and marketing of USB, Wireless USB, USB On-The-Go, and the maintenance of the specifications, as well as a compliance program.  as the foundation radio of their high-speed wireless specifications for use in next generation consumer electronics, mobile and computer applications. Sybase iAnywhere is collaborating with WiMedia Alliance members including Artimi and Staccato Communications. Artimi is a fabless semiconductor company A fabless semiconductor company specializes in the design and sale of hardware devices implemented on semiconductor chips. It achieves an advantage by outsourcing the fabrication of the devices to a specialized semiconductor manufacturer called a semiconductor foundry or "fab.  developing low power single chip WiMedia-based UWB silicon solutions for applications based on Certified Wireless USB and next generation Bluetooth over UWB. Staccato Communications is a UWB technology pioneer with applications expertise in Certified Wireless USB, Bluetooth and Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity; and has introduced single-chip, all-CMOS solutions to offer lowest cost, small form-factor and low power solutions. iAnywhere is a Team Staccato Partner Program member. Sybase iAnywhere is collaborating with both companies to bring Bluetooth over UWB and certified Wireless USB embedded drivers to market for consumer electronics, PC peripherals, and mobile devices.

"While many companies are focused right now on the hardware to make technologies like next-generation Bluetooth and Wireless USB work -- the real need is for effective software to allow for interoperability and in multiple modes of operation," said Colin Macnab, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Artimi. "The combination of Artimi and Sybase iAnywhere's product and development knowledge brings tremendous value to CE designers working with limited resources. Our media access controller software and semiconductor technology fits well with Sybase iAnywhere's embedded Bluetooth and USB USB

"Our expertise with Bluetooth software provides a natural starting point for our involvement in specifying how Bluetooth will work with ultra-wideband transports," said Nathan Pendleton, area vice president, Mobile Device Solutions, iAnywhere. "By partnering with key UWB semiconductor companies we will be able to provide quality, proven embedded Bluetooth-UWB Software SDKs and drivers."

To support development efforts, the Sybase(R) iAnywhere(R) embedded software services organization provides a team of seasoned engineers that can supplement an existing development effort or provide turnkey software implementations for device manufacturers needing wireless expertise.
