SWIMMING ROUNDUP: GYURIS SHOWS HER GIFTS.Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer LONG BEACH - At the ripe old age of 14, Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. High freshman Vanda Gyuris took what most high school swimmers need years to do and turned it into a short afternoon Saturday at the Southern Section Div. II championships. In her first section finals, Gyuris put on a show, and showed why she hopes to be swimming for her native Hungary at the 2004 Olympics. I'm so happy. This is such a great moment.'' The meet was not without its share of controversy, as Valencia of Placentia senior Andy Harutunian was disqualified dis·qual·i·fy tr.v. dis·qual·i·fied, dis·qual·i·fy·ing, dis·qual·i·fies 1. a. Poly of Riverside won the boys' title with a score of 211.5, and Upland won the girls' championship with 258. Valencia of Placentia finished ninth with 82.5 points. Gyuris, meanwhile, will leave June 19 for the Hungarian meet and hopes to qualify for the European junior championships from it. In a short time, however, she also has left her mark on local high school swimming. ``She's set such high standards for herself from when she was little,'' Thousand Oaks co-head coach Melissa Salderfer said. ``It's incredible what she's been able to do as young as she is. But she puts the work in for it.'' Gyuris nearly pulled off a stunning upset in the 200 free, her first race of the day. Despite swimming in lane 2 and being seeded fifth, Gyuris led at the halfway point, and Salderfer mentioned that she caught her star swimmer looking at the school's records this week. But Gyuris slowed down the stretch and settled for second behind Peninsula freshman Katherine Nelson. Her time of 1:51.75 still was a career best and well below the automatic All-American standard of 1:52.51. Gyuris joined her older brother Aron, who received All-American recognition in the 50 free in 2000, as the only such recipients in Thousand Oaks history. Aron was in attendance at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool and watched as Gyuris then turned the 100 into a nonrace. It also was an afternoon of surprising victory for La Canada sophomore Maryann Boosalis and agonizing defeat for Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. senior Christine Creek. Both came during the final five yards of the 100 breast. Creek led entering the final 25 yards but swam stroke for stroke with Boosalis down the stretch. In the final race of her high school career, Creek was touched out for first place by just five one-hundredths, 1:04.00 to 1:04.05. Boosalis' victory came in the 10th-fastest high school time nationally this year. ``That was my last chance,'' said Creek, who was competing in Div. II for the first time after spending the past three years in Div. I. ``But it was a fast time, and I haven't been that fast in a while. It was a good race. I'm proud of how I swam.'' Added Boosalis: ``At that point, when it's neck-and-neck like that, you don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade." I just wanted to put everything I had into that last stroke.'' Both swimmers recorded All-American times in the race. Earlier in the day, Creek, who will swim next year for Arizona State, finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:05.40). Boosalis took fourth (2:07.22) in the same race. La Canada junior Grant Chin capped the day by taking third in the 100 breast in 1:00.47. The Spartans were the area's top team Saturday, taking seventh on the girls' side and sixth on the boys'. He then followed with a fourth-place finish in the 100 free (47.82), failing to drop time in either event from Friday's preliminaries. The day was even more difficult considering Burdine-Ortega finished second in the 100 free and fourth in the 100 breast at last year's championships. ``It happened in back-to-back years: second and fourth,'' Burdine-Ortega said. ``Maybe 24 should be my lucky number.'' |
