A couple of days later, Conwell added another title to his resume: interim head coach of Canyons Aquatic Club. Conwell and the rest of the Canyons coaching staff and swimmers were informed earlier this week that Bruce Patmos, who coached at Canyons for 16 years, was leaving the club to take a position with Washington Township Washington Township may refer to a number of townships in the United States, listed here by state (with the number of "Washington Townships" in each state in parentheses):
``Due to my family's current situation back in Ohio, I have made the very tough decision to leave Canyons in favor of a coaching position closer to home,'' Patmos wrote in a letter to the Canyons' swimmers and their parents. ``This is one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make, knowing that I will be leaving many friends and a program full of great swimmers and parents. After leading and building this club over the past 16 years, it is incredibly difficult to close this chapter of my coaching career.'' Patmos, who was born in Springfield, Ohio Springfield is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark CountyGR6. In just four years, Patmos helped Criste develop from a promising age-group swimmer to a four-time 18-under national champion in the breaststroke. ``He had mentioned something to me about Indianapolis a month ago, but it did catch me by surprise that he decided to take the job,'' said Criste, who competed in his last meet under Patmos on Aug. 7 at the Junior Olympics in Fullerton. ``I have a lot of loyalty to Bruce, and I'm very grateful for everything he's done for me. He is one of the best aspects of the team, and I know him leaving is a big disappointment to a lot of people. ``My talent and my dedication can only take me so far (in the sport), and Bruce has carried me past that point. I will be forever grateful for his coaching.'' Patmos, who was selected Southern California Swimming's Senior Coach of the Year in 2002, enjoyed one of his most successful stints as a coach in 2005. Criste, 16, won the 18-under national titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at the World Championship Trials in Indianapolis in April and the 200 title at the recent ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships in Irvine. Andrade, 25, secured berths to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Woodward, 26, recently broke Ervin's club records in the 50 and 100 freestyles at the Senior Nationals, and Canyons placed third in the combined team competition at the Junior Olympics. Based on its summer success and reputation among the nation's most talented clubs, Canyons was selected to stage one of two Junior Olympics meets in Southern California next year.
