SWIMMING NOTEBOOK: HART VS. C.V: MORE MEANING.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

In years past, the annual showdown between the Hart High of Newhall and Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  of La Crescenta swim teams has been more a preview of the upcoming Southern Section championships than a normal dual meet between nonleague opponents.

Between them, the two schools have filled their trophy cases with a combined six Southern Section Division II titles. Just last year, Hart's boys claimed their first section championship and the Crescenta Valley girls finished runners-up.

But with both schools having been promoted to Division I for this season - and facing long odds at next month's section championships - Friday's meet held more significance for the two than ever before.

``We actually put more focus on this meet than we will when we get to CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). ,'' Crescenta Valley boys' coach Jan Sakonju said. ``We might have three relays and a couple of kids qualify for CIF, but that's it.

``This is something where the whole team is working together. It's a special experience.''

Along with the rest of their league counterparts, Hart and Crescenta Valley were moved to Division I by section officials at the end of last season. The decision was designed to group every Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  power in one division, creating what is expected to be one of the country's top high school championships.

``It's a big step up,'' Crescenta Valley senior Lindsay Taylor Lindsay Corine Taylor (born May 20, 1981 in Poway, California) is a former American collegiate and a professional basketball player who has played in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), Ligue Féminine de Basketball (LFB), the WKBL and most recently the Polish Womens  said. ``You go from having a nice race to racing a bunch of Orange County kids who have swum swum

With the promotion to Division I has come almost impossible time standards to meet just to qualify for the section preliminaries. Junior standout Peter Lee provided another example of the difficulty in moving up. A year ago, he finished fifth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 100 breaststroke in Division II. Now he hopes to just qualify and swim in the Division I finals.

Sakonju, meanwhile, said he has tried to place more emphasis on Pacific League meets and the showdown with Hart. Hart coach Steve Neale added the rivalry Rivalry

``It's always been an intense rivalry for both of us,'' Neale said. ``This meet will always have an identity of its own.''

The six Golden League schools presently share two pools between them, allowing for just 85 minutes of training time most days. At a recent practice, Quartz Hill had between seven and nine swimmers in every lane.

``Those pools are vital to the success of all of us in the valley," said Quartz Hill coach Mark Thibault, whose boys clinched at least a share of their eighth consecutive league title Wednesday. ``The valley keeps growing, and we need pools to do so, as well.''

The new pools will be used by Littlerock, Palmdale, Highland of Palmdale and the new Knight of Palmdale High opening this fall.
