MISSION VIEJO Mission Vi·e·jo

A community of southern California southeast of Irvine. It is mainly residential. Population: 96,300.
-- Janet Evans' legacy in swimming is so profound that one of the summer's most prestigious invitationals is held in her honor at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Following Kate Ziegler's performance Sunday, a motion might be in order to change the name of the TYR/Swim Meet of Champions.

The 18-year-old phenom, representing The Fish Swim Team of Fairfax, Va., capped a brilliant four-day run at Marguerite Recreation Center by smashing Evans' 1988 world record in the 1,500-meter freestyle, lowering her idol's standard by nearly 10seconds to win in 15:42.54.

"If someone would've told me that I would've gone 15:42 today, I would have laughed in their face," said Ziegler, who eclipsed Evans' mark of 15:52.10, set at the U.S. Spring Nationals in Orlando, Fla., in March 1988, three months before Ziegler was born.

"(Janet) is the most amazing swimmer I've ever seen and I have so much respect for her. I heard she might be here this weekend, so I'm disappointed I didn't get to see her."

Ziegler, who had broke meet and pool records en route to winning the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles in the first three days of competition, nearly took down the longest-standing world record in any event in March when she clocked 15:53.05 at the FINA FINA Fédération Internationale de Natation (French: International Swimming Federation; Lausanne, Switzerland; formerly Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur)  World Championships in Australia.

She didn't leave anything to chance Sunday, producing the first world record in the Marguerite pool since the 1985 U.S. National Championships U.S. National Championships may refer to:
  • A major gymnastics event held in the United States.
  • A major boxing event held in the United States.
  • Before 1968, the tennis tournament now called the U.S. Open.
. The effort even surprised her coach Ray Benecki, who predicted Saturday that Evans' 1994 meet record of 16:13.81 would be tough to beat.

Meet official Mary Jo Swalley and USA Swimming USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for competitive swimming in the United States. He previously coached at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1992 where he coached NCAA champions such as Lee Ann Fetter and Whitney Hedgepeth [1] .  had the distinction of being in attendance in 1988 when Evans set the record and again Sunday to watch Ziegler.

"It was a spectacular world-record effort," Schubert said. "It says a lot about a world record when it belongs to Janet Evans Janet Elizabeth Evans (born August 28, 1971) is a record-breaking American competitive swimmer.

Born in Placentia, California, Evans started competitive swimming as a child. By the age of 11 she was setting National Age Group records in the longer events.
and it says even more when it lasts for almost 20 years. And to break it by 10 seconds is really spectacular. The thing that impresses me most about Kate Ziegler Kate Ziegler (born June 27, 1988 in Fairfax, Virginia) is a world record distance swimmer from the United States, who won two golden medals at the 2005 World Aquatics Championships in Montréal and the same two events at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne.  ... is she can do it eyeball See eyeballs and eyeball driven.  to eyeball and she can do it all by herself."

Ziegler's performance was a tough act to follow, but USC junior Rebecca Soni turned in her second meet-record in as many days, outlasting a tough field in the women's 100 breaststroke, including Trojan Swim Club teammates Keri Hehn (second, 1:09.48) and American record-holder Jessica Hardy (fourth, 1:10.36 -- to win in 1:08.80.

"When I turned (at the 50) I actually had some energy left, which is not usual for me," said Soni, who also finished third in the 200 individual medley in a lifetime-best 2:19.47. "I'm really happy with how it went. It just keeps me motivated to continue to work hard every day."

South African national teamer Lyndon Ferns lowered his 2005 meet record in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 53.57. Former Saugus standout John Criste, who will graduate Thursday from Mission Viejo High, took third in the men's 100 breaststroke in 1:05.30.
