SWIMMING: WATER WORKS FOR FLINTRIDGE S.H. TOLOGS ARE DIV. II TITLE CONTENDER.

Beth Strub could only place a positive spin on the results so many times.

The most accomplished high school swimmer on Flintridge Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also used in the Anglican Church.
of La Canada Flintridge's roster, the junior took pride in winning Mission League individual titles and qualifying for the Southern Section Div. I finals her first two seasons.

But just once in her career did she want to share in the ultimate team experience.

"I never actually thought it would happen," Strub said. "We've always had one or two really good swimmers, but we never had the depth."

Following Thursday's 100-70 victory over five-time defending league champion Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, the ear-to-ear grin on Strub's face was one of many indicators that the tide might finally be shifting in the Tologs' favor.

The arrival of freshmen Andrea Kropp, Briana Swinney and Madeline Talt, combined with the league's reassignment to Div. II, has Flintridge Sacred Heart confident it can win the Mission title and possibly capture the program's first Southern Section championship since winning the Div. III crown in 1995.

"(Being in Div. I) we haven't had that many people go to CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). , but this year, we actually have a whole team going," Strub said. "With Bianca Marquez, who was a fast senior, graduating, I didn't know how good we would be. But when the really fast freshmen arrived, I knew we were going to dominate."

The undefeated dual-meet record, highlighted by the victory over Harvard-Westlake -- just the Wolverines' second league loss in 12 seasons -- is only one reason why the Tologs are being considered as strong contenders to capture the title May 12.

The next challenge waiting for Flintridge Sacred Heart is the 27th Josh Mkalar/Royal Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

"We won't have our entire team, but I will be there and we will put on a good show," Tologs coach Garry Appel said. "We expect to be right there in the thick of things."

"Saturday (at Mission Viejo) was an individual thing, but (Harvard-Westlake) was all about the team aspect and us coming together as a team and having a lot of spirit," Kropp said. "To keep our focus for that long, it was extraordinary."

Only 13 years old, Kropp has already made a giant splash on the local scene, setting program records in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.01) and 200 individual medley med·ley

"He got some great kids in over there and Andrea is definitely a special talent," Harvard-Westlake coach Darlene Bible said. "Garry's done a great job with them."

The chemistry between AlexMarquez, Kropp, Strub, Swinney and Talt -- all members of Swim Pasadena -- has been instrumental in the Tologs' success.

As Thursday's meet was winding down, Lauren Matulich and Kropp finally realized the Tologs were going to hand Harvard-Westlake its first league loss since 2001.

It will feel better for Strub if the Tologs can achieve the pinnacle pinnacle (pĭn`ĭkəl), minor architectural motif of vertical tapering shape, usually crowning a pier, buttress, or gable.
