SWIMMING: SUN, VANDENBERGE HAVE AMUSING TIME PAIR LEADS SWIM PASADENA TO THIRD.

IRVINE - Only a trip north on the Santa Ana Freeway The Santa Ana Freeway is one of the principal freeways in Southern California, connecting Los Angeles, California and its southeastern suburbs. The freeway begins at the four level Bill Keene Memorial Interchange complex in downtown Los Angeles, signed as U.S. Route 101.  to nearby Disneyland might have provided more happiness Saturday night for Sara Sun and Samantha VandenBerge.

``The team thing is what I'm going to remember the most,'' said Sun, 16, who finished fifth in the individual standings with 68 points, leading all female swimmers from California. ``This is a truly amazing a·maze

The group was carried by Sun, who was one of only two female swimmers to place among the top 10 in six events.

Elizabeth Beisel, 12, from Magnus Aquatic Group (Maryland) - who finished second (77) to Samantha Woodward (80) of Oklahoma's Kerr-McGee Swim Club in the individual standings - was the only other individual to match Sun's accomplishment.

``(Sun) amazes me,'' said VandenBerge, 17, who recorded her fourth top-eight finish Saturday to place seventh in the high-point race with 63 points. ``She's such a talented swimmer, and I'm so proud of her. It's just cool, because we finished 1-2, and we placed third as a team, and we're having the most fun while doing it.''

Swim Pasadena coach Terry Stoddard watched from the deck with a big smile as his swimmers battled throughout the 1,500, with VandenBerge leading wire to wire, and Sun passing Long Island Aquatic Club's Elizabeth Goldson at the 800 mark to take over second place for good.

``The whole time in the ready room, we kept saying `1-2,' '' said Sun, who logged 4,700 meters over 16 swims at the Junior Nationals, contributing to a total of 7,900 meters over 22 races in an 11-day period, including Senior Nationals.

``It was definitely good motivation for me to try to catch up with her and race her.''

: ``That was special. For Sara to go a best time after swimming the 50, and for Sam to have the great race she did, it was really fun to watch.''

Sun's performance in the 1,500 - in which she dropped almost 20 seconds from her time Aug. 7 at the ConocoPhillips Senior National Championships - came less than 30 minutes after her eighth-place finish in the 50 free (26.99).

Those 11 points proved critical to Swim Pasadena in holding off San Diego's North Coast Aquatics (215) in the race for third.

David Mosko was the men's high-point winner with 91 points, leading the way for the Cincinnati Marlins, who also captured the team title (278).
