Stefanec, the defending Mission League champion in the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle, won by more than a body length against a strong field that included top area swimmers such as Westlake junior Aislinn Smalling (sixth place) and Canyon of Canyon Country grad and UNLV-bound Roxy Camuso (eighth place). ``I (am) happy with the time,'' Stefanec said. ``It was a talented field, but I didn't think about that going into the race. For me, it's not about the people you face, but improving as an individual.'' Other local standouts: Competing for the Santa Clarita Valley-based Canyon Aquatics swim team, Bob Hwang placed first in the boys' 13- to 14-year-old 100 freestyle (55.98) and the 200 butterfly (2:17.26). Adria Morales of Canyon Aquatics finished first in the girls' 11- to 12- year-old 100 backstroke (1:11.92) and the 100 butterfly (1:07.72), while Allison Morales -- Adria's identical twin sister -- placed first in the girls' 100 freestyle with a time of 1:10.15.
