to a share of the Marmonte boys' title last season and is a big reason they are expected to contend again this season. He turned in the area's top finish at the Junior Championships when he placed eighth in the 50 freestyle (21.13). Salazar was a Southern Section finalist a year ago, but the Highlanders managed just a fourth-place finish in league. The versatile Boston-bound athlete is joined by several young club swimmers who hope to give Royal a chance for a title.

``I think we're going to be good,'' Salazar said. ``We've got some good freshman and we have strong relays.''

Today's meet is Salazar's first of the year with Royal. She competed in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free and 100 and 200 backstroke at the Junior Championships. She plans to concentrate on the 500 and 200 free during the high-school season.

Other Highlanders to watch include freshman Lindsay Palmberg and fellow water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. ``She's just blazing away,'' Royal coach Steve Snyder said of Huffman. ``She's certainly one of the fastest in the league.''

The Highlanders returned from a two week layoff in which their pool was repaired to win both the girls' and boys' meets in last week's league opener against Newbury Park. Most of the boys' success is expected to come at the individual level this season. ``Thousand Oaks and Westlake are going to slug it out for the boys,'' Snyder said.

The Warriors traditionally have the highest individual finishers, while Thousand Oaks finds team success with points provided by its depth. Gyuris was the only Lancer to reach the Southern Section finals last season, finishing third in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 200 free.

Westlake senior Dave Stelle takes over as Gyuris' toughest competition. The senior is scheduled to swim his first meet of the season this week against Newbury Park after recovering from an injured abdomen muscle. Seniors Elliot Myrhe and Zach Shuler also return from the 1998 Westlake team that placed fifth in Division I. The strongest team at Westlake this year, however, is expected to be on the girls' side.

``Definitely,'' assistant coach Jon Fleming said. ``The girls are going to be awesome.''

The defending league champion Warriors are undefeated after Monday's win against Louisville.

Junior Tayrn O'Leary returned from the Junior Championships to qualify for two Southern Section events Monday. Last year's Southern Section finalist turned in qualifying times in the 50 and 100 free. Freshman Sarah Bultema qualified in the 100 fly.

Agoura usually isn't among the Marmonte's swimming powers, but opponents aren't ready to count out the team coached by Jason Rosenthal. Rosenthal showed he had speedy swimmers when he produced league champions in boys' and girls' water polo.

Newbury Park graduated its lone Southern Section qualifier from last season. Katy Fick, Lindsey Berke, Jennifer Martens and Erin Campbell provide the best hope for reaching the postseason this year. Junior Andy Hughes For the footballer, see .
