SWIMMING: CAVS' RUN IN DOUBT.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

As a result, Cleveland of Reseda's two-year reign as the City Section girls' swimming and diving champion appears to be in serious jeopardy.

at last year's City prelims -- helping Cleveland's cause in repeating -- the Dolphins avoided any such mistakes at Wednesday's meet at the L.A. Memorial Pool.

Palisades didn't have a single girl post the top qualifying mark in an individual event, but the Dolphins recorded the fastest prelim times in all three relays to create a sizeable advantage over the Cavaliers heading into the section finals.

Palisades' boys' team recorded the top qualifying marks in seven events, putting itself in position to secure a fourth consecutive title next Wednesday.

Cleveland appears to be the Dolphins' toughest challenger in the boys' meet, but a host of teams could be in the hunt in the girls' competition, most notably Granada Hills.

Following a fifth-place finish at last year's City finals and losses to Cleveland in their regular-season dual meet and again at the West Valley League championships, the Highlanders could give coach Gila Ruivenkamp a meaningful birthday present next week by finishing ahead of the Cavaliers.

``I said if we could finish third, it would be the perfect birthday,'' said Ruivenkamp, whose team qualified second in the 200 medley med·ley

``I expect us to go one, two, three,'' Kalan said. ``I'm confident because I know how good they are.''

Should the Conquistadores sweep the top three spots, they could be in contention for a plaque Wednesday.

Van Nuys sophomore Claudia Ochotorena was the only area swimmer to record the fastest prelim times in two events, taking another step toward defending her titles in the 100backstroke and 100 butterfly.

Granada Hills' Lindsey Elam (200 free) and Grant of Van Nuys' June Enich (200 IM) were other top qualifiers in the girls' meet. Cleveland's Michael Chiu (100 backstroke) and Granada Hills' Chris Baier (200 free) recorded the fastest times in the boys' competition.
