SWELTERING SOUTHLAND; MORE RECORD HIGHS FORECAST.

Byline: Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writer

Californians were hit with triple-digit temperatures Monday, leading to record-setting electrical use in parts of the Southland, where the heat wave was expected to continue today, officials said.

A record high of 102 degrees was recorded in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  on Monday when temperatures climbed three degrees above the previous mark set for the same date 29 years ago, officials said.

It is likely that more records will be broken today around the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

, said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

In downtown Palmdale on Monday, the mercury climbed to a searing sear 1

Officially though, Palmdale recorded 106 at the airport, he said.

The beating sun drew a bigger crowd than usual to Courson Park's swimming pool in downtown Palmdale.

. I've had worse, but it was sure hot,'' said lifeguard Tim Walsh.

The heat frayed some people's nerves, officials said.

``Tempers were very short today. . . . Everybody who called today was mad,'' said Deputy John Kiess at the Palmdale sheriff's station. ``People get out in the heat (and) they don't want to be in the traffic. They get home; they fight with their wife and kids.''

In Simi Valley, Cecil LoVato, who lives on Texas Avenue, said he sympathizes with the people of Texas who are contending with a deadly heat wave.

``I'm more concerned about what's happening in Texas. The crops can't be replaced there. Here, you can go to the beach or the mountains,'' he said.

Both Chatsworth and Burbank tied their records on Monday, with Chatsworth recording 107 - the same as last year, and Burbank reaching 101 - the same as 1971, Seto said.

The most notable record setter was Paso Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:

  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model

, which rose to 114 degrees - four degrees above its 1966 record for the date, Seto said. Elsewhere on Monday, Woodland Hills recorded 105 and the Los Angeles Civic Center 94.

Burbank residents likely will see a record-breaking 103 today, Seto said, with the high pressure remaining over Southern California today much like Monday.

Southlanders can expect a 38 percent to 43 percent chance for a warmer-than-normal August and September, Seto said, based on forecasts from the Western Region Climatic Data Center in Reno, Nev.
