KCSN, the radio station at California State University, Northridge, has won three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.

This is the first time the station's news division has won a Murrow Award for overall excellence. The station is one of only five public radio outlets across the country to win such an honor.

``We are very honored because this is among the most prestigious awards that a news department can get in broadcast journalism,'' said news director Keith Goldstein.

The award for overall excellence was given for a compilation of work by KCSN's news team that included an ``Evening Update'' broadcast covering the war in Iraq and breaking news.

Senior Karen Apostolina won an award in feature reporting for a story she did on recycling, while Goldstein won a Murrow for best use of sound for a story he did on model airplanes.

Esha Chhabda of La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks was one of four high school seniors to receive the 2004 Lee Brennan Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Adelphia Cable.

The scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $2,000, are given to seniors who are interested in pursuing careers in the cable and telecommunications industry.

Alana Kress, a student at Wilbur Elementary School in Tarzana, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum to be held Sept. 20-26 in Washington, D.C.

Alana was among a select group of students to earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring some of the nation's most prominent monuments and institutions.

Tracy Kopulsky of Encino is the Pacific Region winner of BIC's national essay contest for its ``Quality Comes in Writing'' program.

Tracy, a fifth-grader at Valley School in Van Nuys, will receive a $500 cash award.

USA Today named Alice J. Chen of Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood as one of 20 students to its 18th annual All-USA High School Academic First Team. The students will each receive a trophy and a $2,500 cash award.

The team was selected by judges based on academic achievement and leadership roles in activities on or off campus.

Jennie J. Kwon of Northridge is the spring recipient of the First-Year Section Scholarship at the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

In summer 2003, she served a judicial externship with Judge John F. Walter of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.

Miranda Rizzolo, a fifth-grader at The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, is among 12 students nationwide to become a national finalist in the 2004 Craftsman/NSTA Young Inventors Awards Program.

The finalists received a $5,000 U.S. savings bond and a trip with parents and teachers to the national awards ceremony on Sept. 27 in Chicago, where the top two winners will receive an additional $5,000 U.S. bond.
