SWEDISH MEDICAL CENTER OPENS COMPREHENSIVE EPILEPSY CENTER OCT. 1
SEATTLE, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Swedish Medical Center announced today the opening of a comprehensive center for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of individuals of all ages with epilepsy and epilepsy-like disorders.
Epilepsy, a disorder of the central nervous system characterized by chronic seizures, is estimated to affect more than 2 million Americans, half of those being children. Once diagnosed, epilepsy can be treated by medication or surgery.
Offering both patient evaluation and treatment in one facility, the Epilepsy Center includes a four-bed inpatient monitoring unit and an outpatient diagnostic clinic. Clinical evaluations of adults and children, inpatient long-term EEG-video monitoring, medication management and surgical treatment are among the services available.
An interdisciplinary team of physician specialists, specially trained neurosciences nurses and technical staff, psychologists, social workers and rehabilitation experts provides care for patients and their families regionally and worldwide.
The Epilepsy Center at Swedish is directed by Allen R. Wyler, M.D., neurosurgeon and medical director, formerly of the EpiCare Center in Memphis, Tenn. Wyler is nationally recognized as an expert in the surgical and medical treatment of epilepsy, is one of the few specialists with a neurosurgery practice dedicated solely to the treatment of epilepsy, and performs more epilepsy surgeries than any other physician in the United States.
