SWEDE HAS LEAD; PARNEVIK UP BY TWO.

Byline: Brad Townsend Dallas Morning News

Jesper Parnevik Jesper Bo Parnevik (born March 7, 1965) is a Swedish professional golfer. He is the son of the Swedish entertainer Bo Parnevik.

Parnevik was born in Stockholm, Sweden.
eats volcanic sand to cleanse his system, wears a cap with a flipped-up bill and wears pants that look two sizes too short.

He never has won a PGA Tour The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the USA's main professional golf tours. It is headquartered in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Its name is officially rendered in all caps as “PGA TOUR".  event, much less a major championship.

But Parnevik is the third-round leader of the 126th British Open. And by the end of a strange Saturday at Royal Troon Golf Club Royal Troon Golf Club is a links golf course located in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The club was founded in 1878, and its Old Course is now one of the host courses for The Open Championship, one of the major championships on the PGA Tour and European Tour. , the casual, pencil-thin Swede swede: see turnip.  suddenly looked poised to pull off a breakaway.

While Parnevik was shooting a third-round 66 to reach 11 under, the tournament's only three other serious contenders didn't muster any momentum entering today's final round.

Second-round leader Darren Clarke Darren Christopher Clarke (born August 14, 1968) is a professional golfer from Northern Ireland who plays on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. He was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone. He played college golf at Wake Forest University in the United States.  led Parnevik by four shots through nine holes Saturday but cratered to a back-nine 39.

Clarke (9 under), Justin Leonard Justin Charles Garrett Leonard (born June 15, 1972) is an American professional golfer.

Leonard was born in Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and was the individual NCAA champion in 1994.
and Fred Couples Frederick Stephen Couples (born October 3, 1959) is an American professional golfer and former World No. 1 who competes on the PGA Tour. He has won numerous events, and is most famous for winning the 1992 Masters Tournament.  (both 6 under) are the only players within six shots of Parnevik. Parnevik wasn't the least concerned about Tiger Woods' course-record-tying 64 on Saturday, which moved him to 3 under.

``I never thought 3 under was going to be a factor,'' said Parnevik, who teed off after Woods completed his round. ``I mean, I know Tiger thinks he still can win. I'm sure he can shoot zero on this course if he gets everything going, but. . . .''

So Woods is not a legitimate threat?

``No, I wouldn't say so,'' Parnevik said. ``If he gets off to a good start and the wind starts blowing about 80 miles per hour, maybe. But if the weather stays like it is today, I expect some low scores. I think Tiger has to get close to breaking 60 to have a chance.''

Clarke, Leonard and Couples didn't raise white flags after their Saturday rounds but didn't seem especially optimistic, either.

For Leonard and Couples, it was a day of blown birdie opportunities. While Parnevik rose and Clarke plummeted, Leonard and Couples tread water. Leonard, paired with Clarke, didn't make his first birdie of the day until sinking a 30-footer on No. 17.

Couples parred every hole until the famed par-4, 463-yard 11th - the Railroad Hole. From 168 yards away, he hit a 6-iron that bounced four times, rolled about 12 feet and fell into the cup for an eagle.

``I was lucky,'' Couples said. ``Jesper and I hit into the same spot. He hit a 7-iron. I told my caddie I needed a bit more club. I told my caddie I'd hit a good one, but it was still lucky. It bounced straight. They don't always do that here.

``I don't think I can win unless I shoot 64 or under. I'm looking forward to a good start, but today, it was a pretty boring round.''

Leonard got much the same results, but his round hardly was uneventful. During the first four holes, he and Clarke were followed, inside the ropes, by the Duke of York

in 1947. While Clarke gained momentum with birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 6, Leonard seemed caught in the wake.

Leonard grazed the cup on birdie putts on five of the first six holes - including at 10-footer at No. 6, a hole he eagled Thursday and Friday.

``The hole got smaller and smaller for me as the day went on,'' Leonard said. ``If I can go out (Sunday) and strike the ball the way I did today and hole a few more putts, then I still have a chance. Hopefully, I can make things interesting.''

Then again, Parnevik has a way of making every round interesting. Parnevik, whom playing partner Brad Faxon referred to as ``goofy'' earlier this week, seemed headed for an opening-round 74. But he birdied four of his last five holes.

Still, he showed up Friday with a new putter, then closed out a second-round 66 by bouncing a shot off a TV tower at 18 and holing a 50-foot putt for par. On Saturday, he two-putted from the middle of the seventh fairway, 50 yards from the green because he worried he couldn't stop an iron approach shot.

Leaders: Jesper Parnevik shot a 5-under-par 66 for 202 and a two-stroke lead over Darren Clarke. Fred Couples and Justin Leonard are five strokes back.
