Antoun wrote that three kidnappers had entered his Woodland Hills home early Thursday and taken his family hostage at gunpoint, demanding he wear the vest and get them $200,000 from the dealership.

Holter said he tried to maintain a casual banter.

``We were having a conversation about cars,'' Holter said. ``But I was looking at this piece of paper that had this alarming information - like, 'My wife and daughter are being held hostage, they put explosives on me, they want $200,000.'''

Holter called police and the dealership was evacuated. The vest did not contain explosives, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. John Pasquariello. But when police went to the Antoun home, it was empty and the family's Mercedes was gone. The daughter's school said she had not shown up for classes.

Detectives said they were focusing on a business dispute and civil lawsuit between Kamyab, who owns a small car-rental agency, and Antoun.

They said they found Antoun's car because it was equipped with a satellite tracking device and discretely followed its driver, who later ditched the Mercedes for a sport utility vehicle.

The pursuit eventually led detectives to arrest Kamyab in a San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Police officials said they found in Kamyab's hotel room a copy of a lawsuit he filed stating that Antoun reneged on a deal to send customers Kamyab's way.

Jean and Pete Szabo, both 43, who live across the street from the Antouns, expressed relief that no one was harmed.

``They're very nice people,'' Jean Szabo said.

Neighbors said they weren't aware that anything had happened in the quiet neighborhood until Thursday afternoon when they spotted police in unmarked vehicles.
