SUSPECTS' GETAWAY CRASHES INJURE 5.

NORTH HILLS - Two burglary suspects fleeing from detectives crashed into three other vehicles Monday, injuring themselves and three innocent victims in a busy intersection, police and witnesses said.

The two suspects, identified as Roldy Juse, 19, of Sun Valley and Mario Baccillieri, 18, of Van Nuys were believed to be responsible for at least 50 residential burglaries in the San Fernando Valley from late 1999, said LAPD Detective Gil Uribe of the Foothill Division.

``They're pretty sophisticated burglars. They seem to know the good homes to hit, working nicer neighborhoods with lookouts and quietly breaking windows,'' Uribe said.

The detective said police are still looking for at least two other suspects tied to the scores of burglaries.

After receiving clues about the burglars' extensive operation, Foothill and Special Investigation Section detectives were in unmarked cars doing surveillance on the two suspects about noon Monday in the 15000 block of Hiawatha Street, said Cmdr. David Kalish, the Los Angeles Police Department's top spokesman.

While some detectives followed the suspects to a second home, other detectives went to the first home where the burglary had occurred, Kalish said.

After the suspects came out of the second home in the 15500 block of Lassen Street carrying bags of stolen items, detectives in their undercover cars surrounded their Honda getaway car, Kalish said.

But the driver backed into one unmarked car and managed to squeeze out from the detectives' cars, Kalish said.

As the two suspects fled, detectives followed, calling ahead for marked police units and a helicopter, the commander said. But they did not arrive before the suspects crashed.

Less than a minute into the chase, the suspects, who knew they were being followed, ran a red light and crashed into two pickup trucks - one going south and the other north on Sepulveda Boulevard at Lassen Street, officials said.

Then the suspects crashed into a Chevy Blazer northbound on Sepulveda at Lassen shortly after 1 p.m., police said.

The unmarked detective vehicles were not involved in the crashes.

A 50-year-old man received moderate injuries to a leg and shoulder, according to a nursing supervisor. Four others, including the two suspects, received minor injuries, according to fire and hospital officials.

At the scene, detectives pulled more than $5,000 in stolen items from the suspects' car, including a VCR, money and jewelry, Uribe said. The detective said the two men were pawning off most of their loot.

Some witnesses to the crashes questioned the police actions.

``We didn't hear any sirens. My friend got hurt,'' said D.J. Viray, who was traveling in front of his co-worker in a pickup truck that was hit. ``They should have had a siren on to warn us that they were chasing someone. It could have been me.''

Cmdr. Kalish argued that the detectives followed LAPD policies by calling for marked units and a helicopter.

``All police policies were followed. . . . The officers did everything by procedure,'' Kalish said.

The two suspects have each been arrested on suspicion of two counts of residential burglary, said LAPD Officer Jason Lee.
