SUSPECT IN BANK HOLDUPS ELUDES POLICE; DRIVER HELD.

Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  bank robberies abandoned his getaway driver Thursday after a freeway pursuit, then carjacked a 78-year-old woman's vehicle to flee, sheriff's deputies said.

The man apparently ran three or four blocks through a Granada Hills neighborhood before approaching the elderly woman and demanding the keys to her maroon Dodge, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Sgt. Meanwhile, his suspected getaway driver, Theresa Spencer, 43, of Granada Hills was arrested at gunpoint after she stopped the car outside a 7-Eleven store on Balboa Boulevard and Chatsworth Street, said Lt. Tim Peters Tim Peters may refer to:

 of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Sheriff's Station.

The FBI and Los Angeles police joined the investigation to determine whether the woman's male companion matched the descriptions provided in other Southland robberies, Peters said.

In all three local heists, a man approached a bank teller, said it was a robbery, demanded large bills and fled. No weapons were seen.

California Federal Bank California Federal Bank, often abbreviated to "Cal Fed", was a savings and loan bank in California. It existed from 1926 until 2002, when its parent company Golden State Bancorp was acquired by Citigroup, resulting in the bank being merged into Citibank.  on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus was hit at 11 a.m. Thursday. The robber was last seen fleeing through the bank parking lot. As in the other robberies, authorities refused to say how much cash was taken.

A man matching that description and seen fleeing in a similar vehicle - a white pickup truck - robbed Wells Fargo Bank in Valencia on July 21 and First Nationwide Bank on Lyons Avenue two days earlier, sheriff's deputies said.

``We had developed information from those robberies and had a good vehicle description,'' Peters said.

He followed it from there, then west on the Ronald Reagan Freeway and followed as it exited at Balboa, Peters said.

``The male split, but we ordered the female to exit the vehicle at gunpoint,'' Peters said.

Spencer, believed to be the suspect's wife or girlfriend, was being held on $50,000 bail.
