, then over a 12-foot drop and taking off cross-country, the man apparently tossed out at least four kilograms of cocaine - 8.8 pounds, worth $82,000 to $96,000 on the street - before abandoning his van and fleeing into the brush.

``The officer stopped the van for a registration violation but then the van took off again before the officer made contact,'' said CHP Officer Doug Sweeney.

helicopter spotted it abandoned next to a house off dirt Lagos Road, about four miles away. Deputies following the van's tracks found four bags of cocaine.

Deputies hunted without success for the man for more than five hours through a hilly, brushy one-square-mile area dotted with mostly expensive, ranch-style homes, about halfway between Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and Palmdale, Deputies knocked on doors and checked vacant homes and a police dog followed the van driver's scent, which at one point went up a road and doubled back again, as if he had spotted a law officer waiting for him.

The CHP officer tried to stop the van about 10 a.m. on the Antelope Valley Freeway near Sand Canyon Road. After pulling over on the shoulder, the van sped off and the CHP officer pursued it.

The van topped 90 mph before getting off the freeway on Escondido Canyon Road, then up dirt Shallow Creek Road, the CHP said.

Turning into a lot containing a mobile home, the van circled the mobile home three or four times before crashing into an outdoor spa and then racing off over a 12-foot drop, Sweeney said. The CHP cruiser couldn't follow, he said.

The suspect was described only as a Latino male with a mustache, wearing dark blue sweat clothes.

Anyone with information on the man's whereabouts is asked to call the Palmdale sheriff's station at (661) 267-4300.
