SUSAN E. ENGEL ELECTED AS A DIRECTOR OF THE PENN TRAFFIC COMPANY

 JOHNSTOWN, Pa., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Penn Traffic Company (AMEX: PNF) announced today the election of Susan E. Engel as a director of the company.
 She becomes the ninth director of the company.
 Engel is currently president and chief executive officer of Champion Products, Inc., a subsidiary of the Sara Lee Corporation (NYSE: SLE) which manufactures and distributes activewear. Prior to joining Champion Products, she was a vice president and partner with the New York office of Booz Allen & Hamilton Inc., a management consulting firm. There she led the firm's retail consulting practice in the eastern United States including extensive experience in the supermarket industry. Prior to Booz Allen, Engel worked for the J.C. Penney Company, where she held various marketing and personnel positions. Engel received an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Business School and a B.S. degree in industrial labor relations from Cornell University.

Additionally, the company operates wholesale food distribution businesses serving 138 licensed franchises and 130 independent operators and a discount general merchandise business with 17 stores. Grand Union, in which Penn Traffic holds a 17.8 percent equity interest, operates supermarkets and food stores in the eastern United States.
