SURGEON REMOVES PLASTIC CHIP IMPLANTED IN GOVERNOR'S THROAT.Byline: Rick Orlov Daily News Staff Writer Gov. Pete Wilson underwent his third throat surgery in two years at UCLA on Friday to remove a plastic chip implanted over the summer to strengthen his vocal chords. Dr. Gerald Berke removed the clear plastic chip during a 40-minute procedure, saying it failed to help the governor overcome a problem with his voice breaking when he spoke. Berke said there was no evidence of any throat cancer, and the governor's recuperation recuperation /re·cu·per·a·tion/ (-koo?per-a´shun) recovery of health and strength. was hindered initially because of his brief run for president when he was unable to properly rest his voice. The governor should be ready to deliver his ``State of the State'' message Jan. 7, Berke said. ``He's going to rest his voice over the holidays, but then he will be able to speak normally,'' Berke said, adding Wilson will continue a regimen of working with voice coaches. The chip, which was the size of a small fingertip fin·ger·tip (f ng g r-t p, was implanted in July to help eliminate the raspiness in the governor's voice.
