Probably about time for Pete Sampras to crank it up, too, and stop messing around if he's going to win his eighth Wimbledon. ``I keep saying the law of averages - sooner or later he has to lose - and there's a group of guys begging for it,'' says NBC's John McEnroe of Sampras' first week of tight wins. Adds TNT analyst Jim Courier: ``At some point in this tournament, Pete is going to have to step it up a notch. He's going to have to start thumping returns when it matters. You can't just hit the ball in the middle of the court and hope your opponent will make a mistake.'' Wimbledon men's final, Channel 4, 9 a.m. (NBC and TNT has men's semifinals Friday at noon and 5 p.m.)
