SATURDAY

A funny thing happened on the way to the Triple Crown. ``I was up in Saratoga going up to check on my house, and right out there on the street they were selling Funny Cide baseball caps and Funny Cide T-shirts,'' race caller Tom Durkin said. ``The lady told me, `We can't keep these things in stock.' '' New York's own Funny Cide can be the 12th professional equine and the first in 25 years to win the freakish title as winner of horse racing's big three events crammed into a five-week period. And without his working pass, Durkin doubts he'd even be able to get into Belmont to tell everyone who won. ``I don't have any tickets,'' he said. ``I don't care if I went to high school with you. I don't care if you're my mother. I don't have any tickets.'' SUNDAY

What a shame. French Open officials wouldn't allow the sale of cigarettes at Roland Garros Stadium during the two weeks of this year's tournament because they finally enforced a 1992 federal anti-smoking law that has always been rudely ignored by the residents who find no trouble lighting up for any occasion. Thankfully, the rule doesn't apply to those men whose serves on the red mud courts continue to smoke in the 130-mph-plus range. Maybe after today's finale, Andre Agassi can light up a victory stogie sto·gy or sto·gie
