SURFING THE TUBE : TODAY.Byline: Tom Hoffarth John Elway's swagger-into-the-sunset tour starts appropriately with this one. As part of the typical ``Monday Night'' hoopla, the opening song by Joe Walsh is his performance of new lyrics to his song ``Rocky Mountain Way.'' One guess as to how the last word of the title was changed. New England at Denver, Channel 7, 5:20 p.m. TUESDAY Another documentary about Roger Maris Jacob or Jakob Maris, 1837–99, the most celebrated, painted domestic interiors but is particularly famous for his vigorous landscapes in oil and watercolor. Rich in color and large and simple in composition and handling, these paintings are among the finest of the Hague school. They usually depict the rich countryside under luminous gray skies. The Rijks Museum has a notable collection, including Arrival of the Boats. isn't overdoing it, especially this one. As his record is being erased, the memory of the man shouldn't be. If the restored clips of Maris hitting each of the last bunch of homers in his quest for 61 aren't enough, the sports writers who were there to recount each precarious step of Maris' season may tear at your emotions even more. ``Roger Maris: Reluctant Hero,'' ESPN, 4:30 p.m.; ESPN Classic, 7 p.m. WEDNESDAY Magic Johnson is the scheduled guest with Jay Leno, and the conversation shouldn't stray to what the former Lakers star thinks about the current NBA lockout. ``Tonight Show,'' Channel 4, 11:35 p.m. THURSDAY The U.S. Open continues to shake out the contenders from the pretenders in quarterfinal play. Without any major upsets in Week 1, it'll be enough sharp play to make even John McEnroe shut up and just watch. U.S. Open, USA Network, 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Quarterfinals are also Wednesday, USA Network, 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Women's semifinals are Friday at 8 a.m., Channel 2. FRIDAY This two-hour retrospective on the history of KCOP's 50 years in Los Angeles (it started as KLAC-TV in 1948) includes some vintage local sports clips that anyone who cares about the city's history will be amazed to see. ``13 at 50,'' Channel 13, 8 p.m. SATURDAY Since CBS is back to doing football, ``Super Saturday'' returns at the U.S. Open - which is a nice way of saying the network has crammed the women's finals in between the men's semis to keep Sunday free for the NFL. But even in tennis-conscious Westwood, Super Saturday means the return of UCLA football, and they're plenty conscious of the fact the Bruins' defense gets a test from Texas running back Ricky Williams, who ran for 215 yards in the Longhorns' opener. Texas at UCLA, Channel 7, 12:30 p.m. SUNDAY The local Fox affiliate, KTTV, is going back to its viewer phone-poll method of deciding which NFL game to pick up from the network roster. KCBS' decision-making process? Too early to tell. The only given is that the New England Patriots will play their second straight night game, but the spotlight will be on Peyton Manning instead of Drew Bledsoe.
