SURFING THE TUBE: THE WEEK AHEAD : TODAY.

Paul Newman Noun 1. Paul Newman - United States film actor (born in 1925)
Newman, Paul Leonard Newman
 - yeah, the same guy who makes his own salad dressing and microwave popcorn - has made some darn good movies in his day, too. Those who consider ``Slap Shot'' his breakout role probably never saw his portrayal of boxer Rocky Graziano in the 1956 black-and-white classic ``Somebody Up There Likes Me.'' The verdict on Newman? He didn't win the Oscar, although the Academy did honor this flick for best cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.
cinematography

Art and technology of motion-picture photography. It involves the composition of a scene, lighting of the set and actors, choice of cameras, camera angle, and integration of special
and art direction. And there's no doubt when ``Raging Bull'' was made some 25 years later, Martin Scorsese drew some inspiration from it. ``Somebody Up There Likes Me,'' Turner Classic Movies, 7 p.m.

Tuesday

If Newman puts too much natural butter on the popcorn for your taste, doubtful as that may be, a pre-``Zorba'' Anthony Quinn keeps the fight-night theme alive as he takes a crack at playing a washed-up boxer in the Rod Serling-directed movie. ``Requiem for a Heavyweight,'' Bravo, 5 and 11 p.m. (Also: Wednesday at 10:15 a.m.)

John McEnroe, name the one thing that really bugs you about the way tennis is presented on TV: ``If I could change one thing,'' he said the other day, ``it would be to broadcast as much live coverage as possible - and more matches on the outside courts, particularly with events like the U.S. Open.'' Maybe he hasn't been watching USA Network coverage. The cable channel breaks away from the 1,157th airing of ``Sixteen Candles'' to show about 80-plus hours of live tennis over 11 days and nights, all beginning Monday. In fact, in the last 12 years, USA has done more than 960 hours of live Open stuff, capturing more than one of McEnroe's four U.S. Open title marches. McEnroe, who'll be analyzing it all for both USA Network's and CBS's coverage, has no reason to complain. And that's a nice change. U.S. Open tennis, USA Network, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 4:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; Channel 2, Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus weeknight week·night

Interleague baseball in late August is just what the Angels and Dodgers feel they don't need in a pennant stretch. Actually, each can help by knocking off the other's West Division rivals. But this isn't supposed to be how it works. Save it for the World Series. Angels at San Diego, Channel 9, 7 p.m.; Dodgers vs. Oakland, Fox Sports West 2, 7 p.m. (Note: Saturday, it's the Dodgers vs. Seattle, Channel 11, 1 p.m.)

ABC's Keith Jackson doesn't get many chances to do games from his alma mater, Washington State, where he and Bob Griese will be when UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
opens its college football season with a tough Pacific-10 contest. Fact is, traveling to Pullman, Wash., is no treat for anyone, so maybe Jackson can't complain much. ``Traveling bothers me more than anything else,'' said Jackson, who prefers games as close to his Sherman Oaks home as possible. ``I don't see how (Vin) Scully and (Harry) Caray do baseball all those years. I'd have jumped a long time ago.'' We heard last time Jackson hiked up to WSU WSU Washington State University

season in L.A. without a home team to worry about. But people start complaining, they'll dump a team here and our NFL local blackout rule will go back in effect. Which effectively kills our best-game-of-choice options that the networks can give us nondish owners. As long as we don't make too much noise, no one will know. Just be quiet and enjoy it.
