Caught in a strong riptide that carried them about 75 yards off Faria County Park Beach, three Ventura residents were aided by a surfer and rescued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department The Ventura County Sheriff's Department (VCSD) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, USA, as well as several cities within the county. The four-member crew pulled 67-year-old Bill Stranton and 31-year-olds Shelby and Sheryl Stranton out of the surf after an unidentified swimmer in the area telephoned for emergency help.

``An unidentified surfer went out with his board and was able to bring the swimmers back in a considerable distance,'' said sheriff's Senior Deputy Frank Underlin, a helicopter crew chief who was dropped into the ocean to assist the swimmers.

Underlin and Shelby Stranton helped Stranton's father swim back to the beach, while the helicopter crew airlifted Sheryl Stranton out of the water and back to the beach.

``It's in the back of your mind. We were just trying to stay focused,'' Underlin said.

Underlin added that swimmers in the area should exercise extreme caution when in the water and should swim with friends, especially at this time of year, when some beaches are still not patrolled by lifeguards.

If caught in a riptide, Underlin said, swimmers should try to move parallel to the beach until they are able to break loose from the riptide and then swim back to the beach.
