SUPERNATURAL SANTANA OUT DUELS PENNY IN ANGELS WIN ANGELS 3, DODGERS 1.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - The Angels anticipated Ervin Santana's future would be as bright as his smile, and on a cool and clear Saturday night at Angel Stadium, that future became the present.

Santana's ``temporary'' hold on a rotation spot became a relatively permanent one Saturday, and that was even before he shut down the Dodgers in the Angels' 3-1 win before a sellout crowd of 44,107.

Santana had been filling in for the injured Kelvim Escobar Kelvim Jose Escobar Bolivar [ess-coe-BAR] (born April 11, 1976 in La Guaira, Venezuela) is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (2004-present). Santana gave up one run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday, out-dueling Dodgers starter Brad Penny Bradley Wayne Penny[1] (born May 24, 1978 in Blackwell, Oklahoma)[2] is a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Los Angeles Dodgers.[3] Early career  and lifting the Angels to their fifth win in a row. Meanwhile, the Dodgers fell to 2-9 on their current road trip and four games under .500 (35-39), matching their season-worst.

Penny only gave up four hits in seven innings, but all four came in the Angels' three-run second inning.

Penny finished his night by retiring the final 12 batters he faced.

The victory was Santana's second, the other being his impressive five-hit shutout of the Chicago White Sox The Chicago White Sox are a professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. While Saturday's game may have lacked the flair of a shutout, it was equally notable in how he responded when placed in early trouble.

The Angels had taken the 3-1 lead after two innings when the Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Jayson Werth Jayson Richard Gowan Werth (born May 20, 1979 in Springfield, Illinois) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who currently plays for the Philadelphia Phillies. He has usually been a bench player, but injuries to regular right fielder Shane Victorino and his backup Michael , who homered in the second inning for the Dodgers' only run of the game, got ahead in the count, 3-1, but Santana was up to the task, challenging Werth, throwing two consecutive fastballs past him, including a 96- mph fastball for strike-three and the second out. On the very next pitch, Santana got Hee Seop Choi to pop out and end the threat.

Those two outs began a stretch of 11 consecutive batters retired by Santana, taking him to the seventh inning.

Werth, meanwhile, wasn't through dashing Dodger fans' hopes. The Dodgers put runners on first and second with one out against Angels reliever Scot Shields Scot Shields (b. On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Werth hit a comebacker to Shields, who began an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play, all but ending any Dodgers hopes for a rally.

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead when Werth led off the second inning with his second home run of the season, but the Angels responded with three runs in their half of the second, a rally that got started with a one-out walk by Dallas McPherson Dallas Lyle McPherson (born July 23, 1980 in Greensboro, North Carolina) is a professional baseball player, and third baseman for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Penny found a groove starting with the final two outs of the second inning, retiring 17 of 18 Angels hitters, allowing only a walk to break up the string, but Santana was in a groove himself.

Santana walked one and struck out seven, including Jeff Kent on a 96-mph fastball to end the fifth, with Kent spinning around and falling down after swinging and missing.
