Superior National Insurance Group Inc., the largest private-sector writer of workers' compensation policies in California, said Tuesday it will consolidate its national corporate headquarters into a two-story, 90,878-square-foot facility in Calabasas.

About 400 people will work at the new building at 26541 Agoura Road, just a few blocks down the street from the company's current headquarters. That staffing level is about double the number of workers now at Superior's headquarters.

The lease is for 10 years with the move planned for November. The value was not announced.

The move is necessary because Superior has been growing its business through consolidation. In the last two years, the company has more than quadrupled its size by acquiring Pac Rim Holding Corp. of Woodland Hills in 1997 and Business Insurance Group of Rancho Cordova last year.

The Pac Rim unit will continue to work out of its Woodland Hills facility, said J. Chris Seaman, Superior's chief financial officer.

Operations at Rancho Cordova remain uncertain.

``I'm not saying a thing about that. I'm not talking about any plans to reduce or transfer people because those plans have not been announced,'' he said.

Superior is a national workers' compensation carrier with $750 million in premiums and more than 1,400 employees nationwide. The company does business in 45 states.
