What would it be like if we didn't know the time? Confusing! This is why we have clocks. This is a digital clock because it shows numbers without using any hands as pointers.

Clocks through the ages have included sand clocks, water clocks, and shadow clocks, like this sun dial. Take a closer look! The sun casts a shadow on the dial to tell the time. See?

The world-famous Big Ben in London has a pendulum. This is a long rod with a weight on the end that swings back and forth. The first pendulum clock was invented nearly 350 years ago!

Telling day from night is a simple way to measure the passing of time. As the earth spins, half of it is always turned toward the sun. The other half is in darkness Adv. 1. in darkness - without light; "the river was sliding darkly under the mist"

The world is divided into time zones of an hour each to make up the 24 hours of any day.
