SUPER MINUTIAE WORTH TACKLING.

Byline: BILLY WITZ

HOUSTON - Other than Tom Brady's political leanings, Bill Belichick's sartorial sar·to·ri·al
adj.
Of or relating to a tailor, tailoring, or tailored clothing: sartorial elegance.

[From Late Latin sartor, tailor; see sartorius.
shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

Shortcomings may also be:
  • Shortcomings (SATC episode), an episode of the television series Sex and the City
and He Hate Me's love-fest with the media, it's hard to find much personality in this Super Bowl.

For Carolina and New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  it's all about the game.

And with nothing much else to talk about, that's what the focus of Super Bowl week has been. The matchup of these like-minded teams has been analyzed, scrutinized, dissected and deconstructed more often than the Kay Report.

Here's a few more things worth keeping in mind when kickoff rolls around at 3:25 p.m.:

It says something about this game that one of the key matchups is between punters. Carolina's Todd Sauerbrun Todd Scott Sauerbrun (born January 4, 1973 in Setauket, New York) is an American football punter in the National Football League who currently plays for the Denver Broncos.  is an All-Pro, and New England's Ken Walter Ken Walter (born August 15, 1972 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American football punter for the New England Patriots in the National Football League. From 1997 – 2000, he played for the Carolina Panthers, from 2001 – 2003 he played for the Patriots, and in 2004 played for  was next-to-last in the AFC (1) (Application Foundation Classes) A class library from Microsoft that provides an application framework and graphics, graphical user interface (GUI) and multimedia routines for Java programmers.  with a 33.6-yard net. In a game where field position is crucial, this could be, too. ...

If nothing else, the Patriots have proved they're great front-runners. The last time they trailed in a game was the last time they were in Houston, on Nov. 23 - a span of seven-plus games, or 435 minutes, 55 seconds. In their playoff victories, they scored touchdowns on their opening possession and have had only one other touchdown. ...

There's nobody on either team who will want the ball in his hands with the clocking winding down and a chance to win the game more than Carolina receiver Kevin Dyson Kevin Tyree Dyson (born June 23, 1975 in Logan, Utah) is an American football wide receiver in the National Football League most recently with the Washington Redskins and is also known as The Music City Miracle Man. . He was the Tennessee player who was stopped inches short of the goal line on the final play of St. Louis' 23-16 victory five years ago. ...

Maybe the teams-with-no-stars theme is not an accident. Neither Carolina nor New England have a player (or even a coach) on the cover of their media guides. The Patriots' is a collage of New England scenery, and Carolina has a Panthers helmet. ...

The Patriots' greatest defensive strength is their versatility. One play Willie McGinest William Lee McGinest, Jr, (born December 11, 1971 in Long Beach, California), is an American football linebacker for the Cleveland Browns. Early life and career  might be a pass-rushing defensive end. The next, he might be running downfield down·field

To, into, or in the defensive team's end of the field.

Adj. 1. downfield - toward or in the defending team's end of the playing field; "he threw to a downfield receiver"
with a tight end in man coverage. The same type of flexibility in the secondary allows New England to play the same scheme but have the players change positions in it, making it tougher for linemen to be in the right protection and the quarterback to make the right reads. ...

Sapp or soothsayer: Warren Sapp picked Carolina to win because even sports writers, he said, could beat Patriots guard Russ Hochstein, who spent more than a year practicing against Sapp in Tampa Bay. ...

Speaking of things sports writers can do, add run a football team. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney used to cover the Redskins Redskins can refer to:
  • Redskin (slang), a controversial term referring to Native Americans
  • The Washington Redskins, a United States football team.
  • Redskin (subculture), a socialist or communist skinhead
  • The Redskins, a 1980s English left-wing soul/punk band
for D.C.-area papers, which is a good reminder that neither of his jobs involve rocket science.

Carolina's Steve Smith beat New England's Troy Brown in a video-game promotion this week, which shouldn't count for much. After all, when one company played off all 32 teams against each other at the beginning of the season, the Super Bowl champ was Arizona. Except that the past eight Super Bowl champions <onlyinclude>This is a list of Super Bowl champions, that is, all the franchises that have won the championship game of the National Football League. Super Bowls are held in an American city that is chosen years in advance.  haven't won the game without winning this one. ...

The Carolina defensive line, led by tackle Kris Jenkins, has been punishing in the playoffs, but they might have a tough time getting to Brady, who is nimble and gets rid of the ball quickly. He hasn't been sacked in the playoffs. ...

If you're looking for Looking for

In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. Antithesis of in touch with.
a hidden hero, look for New England's Bethel Johnson, the fleet rookie who has had some big kickoff returns. His speed might be useful to get behind the sometimes-suspect Carolina corners. ...

A good sign for Brady's career: Quarterbacks wearing the No. 12 have won 11 previous Super Bowls, and four of them - Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Bob Griese and Joe Namath - are in the Hall of Fame. ...

More numerology numerology

Use of numbers to interpret a person's character or divine the future. It is based on the assertion by Pythagoras that all things can be expressed in numerical terms because they are ultimately reducible to numbers.
: Only one other quarterback has won the Super Bowl wearing No. 17 - the Redskins' Doug Williams, who like Carolina's Jake Delhomme is a native of Louisiana CODE, OF LOUISIANA. In 1822, Peter Derbigny, Edward Livingston, and Moreau Lislet, were selected by the legislature to revise and amend the civil code, and to add to it such laws still in force as were not included therein. . ...

You don't have to be a star - or even a starter. If Carolina wins, Delhomme will be the fourth quarterback in five years to win the Super Bowl after opening the season on the bench or in the lineup only because of an injury. He joins Kurt Warner, Trent Dilfer and Brady. ...

To those who insist this is a great Super Bowl matchup: Wouldn't you rather see Green Bay against Indianapolis or Kansas City?

It's not how you start, but how you finish. If New England, which lost its opener to Buffalo 31-0, is victorious, it will mark the third time in four years the Super Bowl champion lost its opener. ...

Belichick never would say it, but the Patriots' coach probably slept better Saturday night than he did in his other trips to the Super Bowl. The four quarterbacks he's had to contend with as a coach or defensive coordinator in the Super Bowl: John Elway, Jim Kelly, Brett Favre and Warner. Favre is the only one who beat him.

It's not unreasonable to think of ways Carolina can win, but try going back to this: Are the Panthers better than either of the two teams that New England already has beaten in the playoffs - Tennessee and Indianapolis?

Didn't think so: Pats 16, Cats 7.

Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme wears No. 17, as did Super Bowl-winning QB Doug Williams. An omen? Not even running back Stephen Davis (48) knows.
