MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 14, 2000

State University of New York (body) State University of New York - (SUNY) The public university system of New York State, USA, with campuses throughout the state.  (SUNY SUNY - State University of New York ) has signed a master agreement with Academic Systems to provide access to Interactive Mathematics and Interactive English for all students at all campuses in the SUNY system.

SUNY, with 64 campuses and 367,000 students, is the nation's largest comprehensive system of public higher education higher education

Study beyond the level of secondary education. Institutions of higher education include not only colleges and universities but also professional schools in such fields as law, theology, medicine, business, music, and art.
. The University has a broad range of educational options, from short-term vocational/technical courses and certificate programs, to baccalaureate degrees, graduate degrees and post-doctoral studies.

The master agreement, which was negotiated through Advanced Learning & Information Services See Information Systems.  within the Office of the Provost PROVOST. A title given to the chief of some corporations or societies. In France, this title was formerly given to some presiding judges. The word is derived from the Latin praepositus.  at SUNY System Administration, provides efficient licensing, individual program design at each participating campus, and economies of scale. "By spreading the cost over the statewide campus system, the agreement permits SUNY to deliver computer-based math and English courses at a price comparable to that for traditional classroom learning," said John Brandon, president of Academic Systems.

"Our business and education needs came together very easily. Academic Systems experts listened to what we were asking for and were able to customize a master agreement to fit the needs of SUNY," said Eric Fredericksen, assistant provost for advanced learning technology. "Academic Systems provides proven multimedia content that can be linked in whole or in part to faculty web sites. This will provide a great resource to faculty to help their students."

Bringing Equity to Education Without Sacrificing Quality

Not all great minds think alike, but all can learn. Academic Systems Interactive Mathematics and Interactive English are pre-baccalaureate, multimedia courses that encourage students to learn at their own pace in their own learning style.

That's a good fit for SUNY, a comprehensive public university with the mission of providing a meaningful educational experience to the broadest possible spectrum of individuals. "Now all SUNY campuses, regardless of size, sector or location, can equitably access quality, comprehensive mathematics and writing tools for their students," said Christine E. Haile, associate provost for technology services at the State University.

Interactive Mathematics and Interactive English are currently offered to over 5,000 students at ten SUNY campuses. They are: Alfred College of Technology; Cobleskill College of Agriculture and Technology; Erie Community College; Delhi College Delhi College can refer to:

Six (Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry, and Tyrone) now make up Northern Ireland (see Ireland, Northern), which is often referred to as Ulster; the remaining  County Community College. So far, participating campuses are experiencing pass rates that are higher than those for traditional entry-level math and English classes.

Academic Systems is partnering with these campuses by providing materials and strategies to increase pass rates and retention rates in entry-level courses. "As instructors and students at the ten campuses share their success stories, the program will grow dramatically and spread to other SUNY schools," predicted Associate Provost Haile.

Multimedia Courses Focus on Students As Individuals

Academic Systems' media-rich products, with extensive graphics and video components, give students a breathing space to review lessons on their own and practice the concepts learned. Wrong answers prompt an explanation of how to solve the question. By making learning personal, Academic Systems courses respond to the needs of learners who are easily bored -- or those who prefer to listen to and repeat the material to themselves.

Course design for Interactive Mathematics and Interactive English allows faculty to customize features -- for example, the number of times students can take each quiz. And instructors can quickly set up the exact course they need.

Interactive Mathematics is a comprehensive instructional program that includes content typically covered in four courses: Prealgebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra algebra, branch of mathematics concerned with operations on sets of numbers or other elements that are often represented by symbols.
