SUNSTORE LETS CUSTOMERS ORDER LINUX FOR WORKSTATIONS.

Responding to customer interest in Linux for the UltraSPARC(TM) architecture, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW), Palo Alto, Calif., has enhanced its online SunStore(SM) service by offering U.S. customers the ability to order commercially supported Linux operating system distributions for the UltraSPARC platform. Today, Sun's U.S. customers interested in Linux for UltraSPARC can order Red Hat Linux 6.1. Now Linux developers and end users can more easily choose Sun's proven reliable, scalable and affordable 64-bit Ultra(TM) workstation and Sun Enterprise(TM) server architecture.

"We're pleased to collaborate with Sun to offer Red Hat Linux for the UltraSPARC platform," said Paul McNamara, Business Unit Leader, Enterprise Market Segment, Red Hat, Inc. "That Red Hat Linux 6.1 is the first Linux-Based operating system to be offered through SunStore furthers the rapid growth, innovation and success of open source."

U.S. customers of the SunStore online commerce services can configure and order Sun UltraSPARC workstations and Sun Enterprise servers, as well as order Red Hat Linux and a broad range of other third party products. Sun provides Red Hat Linux 6.1 for the UltraSPARC platform as the initial commercial Linux distribution available through the SunStore service. U.S. customers can visit http://sun.com/store to view information, configure systems and order online.

"It is Sun's mission to provide our customers and suppliers with a simple, fast and convenient way to do business with us," said Al Ormiston, vice president and general manager for eSun(SM) services. "The SunStore service is making it easy and convenient for Linux developers to order Linux for the robust and flexible UltraSPARC platform."

Consistent with Sun's own computing vision, Linux uses open standards and non-proprietary interfaces. Since joining Linux International in 1998, Sun has collaborated with the open source community on various projects including contributing enhancements to lxrun, a popular Linux compatibility program that allows Linux applications to run unmodified on the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment, and providing technical information and systems to an independent team of engineers to develop the first port of Linux to the UltraSPARC platform. Sun has also made available freely downloadable software development tools that further simplify and streamline the process of developing applications that are source code compatible across both the Linux and Solaris Operating Environments.

Reliable, Cost-Effective Sun Ultra Systems

Sun's Ultra workstations provide a robust, powerful computing solution for a broad range of demanding applications. Since their introduction, the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 workstations have become the most popular, highest volume Sun products ever. Starting at just $1,995 (monitor price not included), Sun's Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 workstation models match PC-level prices yet deliver more features, greater performance and added flexibility for demanding computing applications, making them ideally suited for developers working in mixed computing environments.
