SUNSOFT UNVEILS 64-BIT ROAD MAP FOR SOLARIS; Sets Timetable For Continued UNIX Leadership.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 14, 1996--SunSoft, Inc., the Internet software company, today unveiled its Solaris 64-bit development and technology road map, providing the scalability and performance required by large databases, Internet commerce and visual computing The use of computers for 3D modeling and animation. See visualization.  applications. Solaris is a leading operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system.  providing the most scalable, reliable and secure networked computing solutions for enterprise and Internet applications.

SunSoft's 64-bit Solaris will be made available in phases over the next 24 months with the initial 64-bit capability already shipping in Solaris 2.5. Today, Solaris runs on the 64-bit UltraSPARC microprocessor, performs 64-bit arithmetic and supports a 1 terabyte file system. SunSoft's 64-bit road map includes support for 64-bit fast asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  transfers of large amounts of data between memory and disks and 3.75 gigabytes of RAM per process in mid-1996. Solaris will support large file sizes of up to 1 terabyte each by early 1997 and full 64-bit virtual addressing by early 1998. At that time Solaris will support a file system and file sizes of up to 9 million terabytes. In making the announcement, SunSoft stated its commitment to maintaining one hundred percent compatibility with 32-bit applications and data throughout the multi-phased implementation.

"If you're serious about moving to 64-bits there's no reason to hold back. Choose Solaris and start to use the 64-bit technology we offer today," said Steve MacKay, vice president and general manager of SunSoft's Solaris Products. "SunSoft is already delivering in each of the critical areas required to meet the scalability and performance demands of Internet computing: support for distributed object Distributed objects are software modules that are designed to work together, but reside either in multiple computers connected via a network or in different processes inside the same computer.  applications, uniform access to network directory services, and the most robust OS engine."

Support for Industry Standards

SunSoft's 64-bit implementation will support the 64-bit application programming interface (API) announced today by the 64-bit industry consortium under the guidance of X/Open. Solaris will also follow the API for large files as being specified by the Large Files Summit.

Applications Driving Need for 64-bit

Applications are driving the need for a more scalable, high performance operating environment for enterprise, Internet, and high performance computing. Databases will lead the move to 64-bit Solaris due to the requirement for scalability and increased transaction rates.

"SunSoft and Oracle are working together to define customer requirements for 64-bit UNIX UNIX

solutions. Oracle, the leader in 64-bit database technology, plans to release a 64-bit version of Oracle 7 on the same day SunSoft releases their 64-bit version of Solaris. We will be taking advantage of the incremental 64-bit capabilities of Solaris as they become available," said Jerry Baker Jerry Baker is an American author who has written numerous gardening, household improvement, and health books. He lives in New Hudson, Michigan. Baker is also the host of a gardening program produced by Detroit Public Television (PBS) and a radio show called , senior vice president, Product and Platform Technologies, Oracle Corporation.

Similarly, visual computing applications that need to process large amounts of information, such as multimedia, audio/visual and 3D animation, will require the enhanced throughput performance that 64-bit Solaris will deliver. At the current rate, transactions on Internet servers will explode, also driving the need for new scalability and performance levels to serve the millions of clients on the net and thousands of applications on a Web server.

Support for Volume 64-Bit Microprocessors

Unlike offerings from Hewlett-Packard and SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. , Solaris has already demonstrated its ability to run on 64-bit processors. Solaris currently runs on UltraSPARC, a 64-bit processor and support for 64-bit processors from Intel Corporation (company) Intel Corporation - A US microelectronics manufacturer. They produced the Intel 4004, Intel 8080, Intel 8086, Intel 80186, Intel 80286, Intel 80386, Intel 486 and Pentium microprocessor families as well as many other integrated circuits and personal computer networking  will be released as the hardware becomes available.

"We are pleased with SunSoft's commitment to produce a version of the Solaris operating environment for our 64-bit Merced family of microprocessors. We worked with SunSoft as part of the industry team that defined the 64-bit APIs for UNIX and we appreciate their expertise," said Dave House Dave House is a singer/songwriter from South East England. He first started performing as a solo artist in 2003 after the break up of his old band Lucky Thirteen. Despite other band projects his solo performances remain some of the most successful work he's done. , senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Server Group at Intel Corporation.

Availability

SunSoft's 64-bit Solaris will be delivered in phases over the next 24-months and will allow users to continue to run their 32-bit applications and systematically upgrade to 64-bit applications. Pricing was not announced.
