SUNRISE MEDICAL ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS WILL EXCEED
 ANALYST EXPECTATIONS; ACQUIRES COMFORT SLEEPER
TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Medical Inc. (NYSE: SMD) announced today that it expects first quarter earnings to reach at least $.28 per share, significantly above current security analysts' estimates of about $.24, as a result of exceptionally strong sales. In the first quarter last year, the company earned $.19 per share. The company expects to announce earnings on or about October 28 for the first fiscal quarter, which ended October 2, 1992.
Commenting on the quarter, Richard H. Chandler, chairman and president of Sunrise Medical, said, "We are seeing a continuation of all of the positive performance trends achieved during the fourth quarter. Sales are expected to increase about 35 percent, with strong contributions from all divisions, especially our custom wheelchair product line in the U.S. and Europe. Acquisitions and favorable foreign exchange comparisons supplemented impressive internal growth. Corporate margins are continuing to improve, allowing net income to grow faster than sales. We're expecting the quarter's net income growth to be about 50 percent over the prior year period."
Sunrise Medical also announced today that on October 2, 1992, it acquired the stock of American Decorative Inc. and its wholly-owned operating subsidiary, Comfort Sleeper Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, a manufacturer of foam mattress pads and specialty pillows. Comfort Sleeper's sales increased 20 percent to nearly $25 million for its fiscal year ended August 31, 1992, with revenues concentrated heavily on retail consumer markets. The acquisition is anticipated to add modestly to earnings per share in fiscal 1993, beginning with the second quarter. The purchase price, which consisted of stock, cash and notes, was not disclosed.
Sunrise has signed employment agreements with Comfort Sleeper's three key executives: Michael Rothbard, president and former owner, Ed Huber, vice president of finance and operations, and Randy Spence, vice president of sales. Rothbard will continue to manage the business on a free standing basis, reporting to Larry Buckelew, president of Bio Clinic Corporation, the Sunrise Medical subsidiary which manufactures similar products.
"Comfort Sleeper will enhance our market position in the therapeutic comfort sleep category of the home furnishings industry, where Bio Clinic's Consumer Division has enjoyed consistent growth since its inception six years ago," stated Chandler. "Comfort Sleeper has achieved excellent growth over the past four years and, along with the Bio Clinic Consumer Division, is expected to offset the impact on Bio Clinic of the recent decline in U.S. hospital purchases of foam mattress overlays. Bio Clinic's existing foam fabrication capacity can easily be shifted over to consumer products, avoiding the need for additional investment in equipment and factory space. The consumer market for foam overlay products continues to show robust growth, buoyed recently by a favorable mix shift toward more value added products like Comfort Sleeper's proprietary new line of ventilated pads and pillows, and Bio Clinic's upscale Multizone mattress pads."
Sunrise Medical designs, manufactures and markets internationally medical products used in the rehabilitation and recovery phases of patient care. Products include custom manual and electric wheelchairs, ambulatory and bath safety aids, patient-room beds and furnishings, and therapeutic mattresses for the management of pressure sores. Sunrise products are designed to meet the special needs of three groups of people: the disabled, the elderly and the recovering patient.
