of the Sun Company (NYSE: SUN), announced today its 1992 sponsorship of the Carl Davis Racing Team, with veteran driver Ronnie Tobias at the helm of the SUNOCO GT 100 modified stock car.
"We are very pleased to be a part of the proud Sunoco motorsports tradition," said Carl Davis, team owner. "The quality of Sunoco racing gasolines is well known throughout the racing world and we're happy to be associated with a winning tradition," added the 38-year-old tire store entrepreneur from Concordville, Pa. Sunoco Race Fuels power sprint cars, stock cars, drag racers, motorcycles, snowmobiles and power boats; fueling teams on dirt, snow, asphalt and water.
Fifteen-year veteran driver Ronnie Tobias will pilot the SUNOCO GT 100, named after Sunoco GT Unleaded 100 octane racing gasoline. The product is one of four popular racing fuels that include Sunoco Standard, Sunoco Supreme and Sunoco Maximal. As a driver and a race car builder, the Lebanon, Pa., native is not new to success on the racetrack. A number of championships and consistently high-point finishes have marked his numerous appearances at famous ovals like Reading, Bridgeport, the Penn Nationals, Port Royal and Grandview, to name a few.
"The small block modified SUNOCO GT 100 will campaign at some 13 speedways throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Maryland and Canada," said Garry Miller, manager, Sunoco Custom Products, who heads up the Sunoco Race Fuels program. "This is the heart of our Race Fuels marketing area and we like to associate our program with winning professionals like Carl Davis and Ronnie Tobias," added Miller.
Sunoco's history in auto racing is a long and proud one going back to the Winner's Circle of the 1972 Indianapolis 500 where Mark Donahue collected the champion's trophy in the Roger Penske/Sunoco McLaren Special. Today, Sunoco is well represented through sponsored teams, major events and special events throughout the United States and Canada. Events like the Sunoco Keystone Nationals, the Sunoco Super Chevy Shootouts, the Sunoco Race of Champions, and the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit with champion Terry Labonte at the wheel of the Sunoco Ultra No. 94 car, are just a few.
Sunoco, Davis, Tobias and crew will kick off the 1992 schedule of races on Saturday night, April 11, at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa.
