WRIGHTWOOD - The sun was shining, the sky a perfect shade of blue and the snow fresh early Saturday morning at Mountain High ski resort when hundreds of snowboarders and a few skiers hit the slopes.

So many Angelenos headed for the hills over the holidays that Mountain High - the closest ski resort to the city - sold out of day tickets by 8:45 a.m., leaving many skiers and boarders stuck at the lodge until afternoon ticket sales started at 2 p.m.

``It looked like 'Boardstock' out there,'' said Bob Gibson

About 18 inches of snow have fallen since the beginning of the season, but the Wrightwood resort has made up the difference by running snow-making machines and laying down eight inches of soft, light power before Saturday morning.

``We haven't had much natural snow so we're making snow 24 hours a day,'' said John McColly, director of marketing for the resort.

Management turned off the machines Saturday morning to make for a more pleasant skiing experience for visitors. The resulting snowpack snow·pack

``The snow's really great - you get all the powder in your face going down,'' said Sarah, the lone snowboarder in the family.

Like many at the local resort, the Glenns are regular winter visitors, making the drive up the hill nearly every other weekend to test their skills on the slopes and easily spend eight hours skiing and snowboarding snowboarding: see under skiing.

The holiday weekend brings many regulars eager to try out new equipment they received as presents and there were many glassy, unknicked snowboards on line for the chair lift.

Others decided to try their luck on the slopes for the first time.

Xiao Xu, 19, of Reseda hadn't seen snow in more than a decade and was fully expecting a lot of time up close with the white stuff in her first-ever attempt at snowboarding.
