SUNNY REVIVAL ELEGANCE BECOMES DESIGN HOUSE.

Byline: Barbara De Witt De Witt, uninc. town (1990 pop. 8,244), Onondaga co., central N.Y., a residential suburb of Syracuse.  Staff Writer

Sunshine Hall seems an unusual name for a stately mansion - until you step inside. The elegant architecture, quaint rooms and charming decor of this home are like a ray of sunshine in Los Angeles' historic Windsor Square.

The 9,000-square-foot Classical Revival home designed in 1910 by Theodore Eisen is the 10th Design House fund-raising project of the Assistance League of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , and the welcome mat is out through Nov. 4.

Twenty local designers have worked six months on the house that boasts nine bathrooms, as well as a panoramic tribute to the firefighters of New York City New York City: see New York, city.

playroom. The result is a cheery color scheme of red, pink and garden green that is youthful in spirit yet traditional in application.

In the grand foyer, visitors are greeted with cloudlike displays of silk plaid draperies with swags and jabots on the windows, each playfully trimmed with fringe and pompons to match the tufted love seat, designed by Carolyn E. Oliver-Broder.

Step to the left and you're in the living room, an immense semi-circular room Studio City designer Kathryne Dahlman has dressed up with decorative layers of fabric on the windows and unique floor coverings.

``I wanted the room to be happy and springlike,'' Dahlman says, pointing to the pale yellow walls accented by white moldings and the long yellow cotton damask sofa that's trimmed with fringe on its skirt and framed in a bay of fringed print linen draperies.

``Fringe gives more dimension and texture, and it's a way to introduce color accents without a complete pattern,'' Dahlman continues. ``And on the sofa ,there's a bonus, as it prevents the pale yellow skirt from getting soiled by guests' shoes.''

Instead of wall-to-wall carpeting, Dahlman and others have placed relatively inexpensive seagrass rugs over the dark wood flooring Wood flooring is a type of flooring made from the timber of hardwoods, or of spruce or hard pine. There are two basic manufactured types of hardwood. Brass accents abound and are particularly noteworthy in the unusual sconces modeled after a favorite style of Madame de Pompadour Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, Marquise (later Duchesse) de Pompadour, also known as Madame de Pompadour (December 29, 1721 – April 15, 1764) was a well known courtesan and the famous mistress of King Louis XV of France. . Antique French chandeliers also enlighten the room and give a glow to the Lalique crystal figurines grouped on neo-classical occasional tables.

An antique silver cordial set, a collection of blue-and-white porcelains and the cache pots filled with orchids and palms underplanted with ivy all add to the European ambience.

The small but formal dining room is equally high-spirited, from its rose- print-upholstered walls to the gaily gai·ly also gay·ly

. The pantry now has a crisp and clean look, says designer Jean Frey of Encino, with pale green walls that are accented with a display of white plates hung with green ribbons.

Frey says white wood cabinets with granite counters and tiled backsplashes are still popular, but there's a renewed interest in old-fashioned items such as sinks, light fixtures and drawer pulls that visitors will also notice in the bathrooms.

But she did, by downplaying some windows and then focusing on one with a lavish arrangement of swags in subtle plaids and florals from F. Schumacher fabrics. More dressmaker touches can be seen in the upholstered headboard inside a canopy - a luxurious look even Kollmar admits she hasn't done in years.

Moving up the stairs into the boy's room, guests can sail off to Never- Never Land in the huge pirate ship designed as a play area by Cynthia Piana and Lori Souza of Valencia. Although the ship is the focus of the room, note the imaginative use of canvas and rope for the curtains and the night sky painted over the bed.

The last stop on the tour is the attic, where firemen's hoses are used as a railing to guide you up the stairs. In the center of the room is a huge fire engine play structure painted by famed artist Red Grooms. The surrounding walls reflect happier times in New York City, illustrated by Joani Stewart of Montana Ave. Interiors in Santa Monica and Tim Cornelius of Mural Environments of Van Nuys.

According to Katie Osterloh, president of the Assistance League of Southern California, homes with a Hollywood history, special architecture or historical significance are the most sought after.

Designers are invited to participate and are bound by a contract with the Assistance League. Each designer is allowed to interpret the chosen color scheme and general theme of the Design House within preset guidelines.

Although the homeowner gets to keep the permanent improvements of paint, wallpaper, draperies and wall-to-wall carpeting, the furniture is on loan from the designers. The owner has the first opportunity to purchase any furnishings; otherwise they are returned to the designers' suppliers or sold to visitors, who can check price lists in each room of the Design House.
