SUNDAY SPORTS SECTION HONORED.

Byline: Daily News

TORRANCE - For the third consecutive year, the Daily News' Sunday Sports section was named among the 20 best in the country in its circulation category, the Associated Press Sports Editors announced Wednesday.

In addition, three Daily News sports writers - Tom Hoffarth, Kevin Modesti and Howard Beck - were honored by the nation's sports editors for their work in 2002 in the APSE apse, the termination at the sanctuary end of a church, generally semicircular in plan but sometimes square or polygonal. The apse appeared early in Roman temples and basilicas; it was originally a semicircular recess with a half dome as ceiling and contained the  annual contest that concluded its judging Wednesday.

Butler added: ``The honors underscore the Daily News' commitment to producing not only outstanding coverage of local pro and collegiate teams but also the most complete prep sports coverage available in the area.

``And while it's nice to be recognized by colleagues, the sports team at the Daily News, as with all of us at the newspaper, knows that the most important judge is the reader and how well we serve each every day.''

Hoffarth and Modesti were each honored for their column writing. Hoffarth placed third, and Modesti received honorable mention.

In addition, Lakers beat reporter Beck took second place in game stories and received honorable mention for feature writing.

Ten writers are recognized in each category, and the first five writers are ranked. The Daily News competes in the 100,000-to-250,000 circulation category.
