SUN SIGN STYLE.

Byline: Barbara De Witt Daily News Fashion Editor

Do Leos really rule the universe? Why are Capricorns so darn practical? And why is Libra's wardrobe so, well, unprofessional?

Check your horoscope horoscope: see astrology.

, say experts in the field of astrology, which, like other '70s fads, is back in vogue.

New York shoe guru Steve Madden (his Carnaby Street-inspired styles are sold at Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom) teamed up with astrologer Peggy Yost of Personality Plus astrological services in Phoenix in launching Sole Signs, a fall line of young women's shoes based on the zodiac.

``We are offering an astrological step-by-step guide (with the shoes) because we recognize that our consumer loves reading her horoscope, whether she is looking for serious insight or entertainment,'' said Michelyn Camen, Madden's ``image director.''

``We believe that there may be a strong connection between your astrological sign and fashion preferences.''

For instance, on Madden's chart, a Leo likes shoes that beg to be noticed - he suggests high-heeled, thigh-high boots. For Aries, Madden designed an edgy, stacked platform shoe, while putting Capricorn feet in classic loafers “Penny loafer” redirects here. For the collegiate a cappella group, see Penny Loafers.
Loafers or penny loafers are low, leather step-in shoes usually with moccasin construction, with broad flat heels. They first appeared in the mid 1930s.
.

Jacqueline Bigar, a syndicated astrology columnist for the Daily News and other newspapers around the country, has spent 20 years drawing up astrological charts, and she can determine people's signs by observing their tastes.

Buying in bulk

``Leos are the clotheshorses of the zodiac,'' she said. ``They aren't necessarily the best-dressed, as they sometimes tend to be flashy, but they dress in terms of the total picture. It's a statement about who they are, so their clothes have to conform.'' So whatever her budget, a Leo woman will have a complete wardrobe that's trendy and top quality, favoring Hermes or Christian Dior purses.

Taurus and Capricorn women are the practical signs, said Bigar, but their tastes are different. ``Taurus is more dramatic in her appearance, but she goes for quality because it's going to last. For instance, she'll buy emeralds over aquamarine aquamarine (ăk'wəmərēn`, äk'–) [Lat.,=seawater], transparent beryl with a blue or bluish-green color. Sources of the gems include Brazil, Siberia, the Union of Myanmar, Madagascar, and parts of the United States.  jewels because of their resale value,'' Bigar said. She'll buy one good purse, like a Coach bag, that will work with everything. And she'll invest in a lot of earth colors, although she does love silver and black.

Capricorn, by contrast, is no-frills. ``You'll spot her across the room in a basic brown, black or navy suit.''

Another practical sun sign is Gemini, who tends to like sleek, stretchy stretch·y

 black cocktail dresses.

The sun sign who dresses for comfort is Sagittarius, who looks upon clothing as something she's got to throw on before she runs out the door.

``They're not concerned with the total look, the way a Leo is,'' Bigar added, ``but it doesn't mean they can't be sexy. For a party, they'd probably show up in a slinky slink·y

The sexiest sign of the zodiac sign of the zodiac
Noun

Astrol any of the 12 areas into which the zodiac is divided

Noun 1. sign of the zodiac - (astrology) one of 12 equal areas into which the zodiac is divided
is the Scorpio. ``She's got plenty of black in her wardrobe and shops for things that show her body off to its best advantage, so she's also going to be the one who's constantly dieting and working out.

Color and simplicity

Another femme-fatale sign is Aries, but she's more practical than Scorpio and isn't impressed by designer labels. Bigar has observed that Aries women like red and other vibrant colors but aren't fond of accessories. ``Depending on the situation, she'll either stuff everything in a briefcase, or simply stuff her money in her pocket and not bother with a purse,'' said Bigar.

Libras have trouble making up their minds. They know they want a new dress for any and every occasion, but which one?

``Libras are not free-thinkers, but they're artistic, romantic and very trendy, so they buy whatever is the look of the day,'' Bigar said. ``But then, they've got good taste and probably have a Chanel purse. And when it comes to clothes, they're very young at heart, so they rarely think out a wardrobe - they have a closet full of clothes that don't go together.''

Aquarians are the most free thinking. They're always bizarre about their hair, and they like to dress eccentrically. Think funky, ethnic-inspired looks, and you've got the Aquarian fashion stance.

The detail-conscious sign of the zodiac is Virgo. ``They're into precision dressing instead of drama or comfort,'' said Bigar. ``But then there's Sophia Loren, who's a Virgo and always looking pretty sexy. But I bet she's got a Taurus or Scorpio rising sign in her.''

Cancer is the classic Stepford wife. ``She'll choose a wardrobe that's feminine and conventional, often in white or luminous colors, and probably with pearls to match her pearl buttons,'' Bigar said. ``But she can be moody, so she might show up at a big gala with a boa, similar to her Leo friend's.''

Another sign who likes suits is Pisces. Bigar also finds Pisces women fond of watery colors and clothes with an ethereal quality.
