``I like the online because you can, like, `pause' the classroom for a minute,'' he said.

``When we got close to 1,000 students enrolled we were very shocked by the numbers,'' said Mark Rayfield, assistant principal at West Ranch High.

Student participation has grown every year since the district started offering online summer school in 2001. ``Technology has grown over the last five years, where teachers are more familiar and comfortable with teaching online classes,'' said Daniel McHorney, director of technology services for the district.

The other Hart Union school in the online program is Golden Valley High.

The online classes give students more flexibility, freeing up time to hit the mall or be outdoors. Students see their teachers once a week at the school.

``They do it on their own time,'' said teacher Shalla Makan. ``Especially with teenagers, they don't like to go to bed early, so they're e-mailing me at 2 o'clock in the morning.''

In Makan's health class, students use the Web to listen to her lectures. They do tests online, and share thoughts on peer pressure and drugs by posting to a message board.

And they keep Makan busy. Last week she responded to 370 e-mails.

But some students are sacrificing some of their summer to get a course done, freeing up their fall schedule for Advanced Placement courses.

And some students are in both online and traditional summer school. Lawrence, 15, who is taking an online course through West Ranch High, has tried both. And there's one other thing besides ``pausing'' a class that he likes about online school.

``The best part of online classes I think is: eat in class.''
