Blum met the Brothers (John King and Mike Simpson) around two years ago when he called out of the blue to discuss the possibility of the duo co-producing the next Sugartooth album.

King and Simpson, then finishing work on Beck's ``Odelay,'' an album that would win a Grammy Award The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards) are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the record industry. ``We had the songs written, so it wasn't like the Beck album, which was built from samples from the ground up,'' Blum explained. ``We wanted to enhance what we were doing and experiment with making the guitars sound different in each chorus and verse.''

Since the completion of ``The Sounds of Solid,'' the Dust Brothers have called Hutner and Blum for sessions such as Howard Stern's ``Tortured Man'' from the ``Private Parts'' soundtrack. The guitar-bass duo has also worked on Dust-produced TV commercials and remixes.

``The Dust Brothers aren't musicians, nor do they pretend to be,'' Hutner, 26, said. ``Sometimes, they need a real bass or a real guitar or an original riff. And we can always help them there.''

Last week, King and Simpson beckoned the good-natured Blum to the Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. The Dust Brothers were producing three tracks; Blum was asked to put a bass part down on a song tentatively titled ``Baby.''

In addition, Blum played on the tune that opens Hanson's ``Middle of Nowhere'' disc. The infectious Jackson 5-style romp, ``Thinking of You,'' was one of two songs King and Simpson helped fashion for the Oklahoma high-harmony trio.

``They (the Dust Brothers) like my style of playing for some reason,'' said Blum, who is also 26. ``They call me when they want to, as they say, `sicken it up' a little.''

The Hanson session began on an unusual note. Blum was driving to the Dust Brothers' Silver Lake studio when he noticed a small blond boy in tears outside with his mother.

``I was thinking to myself, `Isn't that sad? Why is he crying?' '' Blum recalled. ``So, I go inside and there are two other blond boys who look just like the one outside. Then, the kid that was crying comes in and jumps on the drums.''

It turned out 11-year-old Zac Hanson was upset because he was asked to play along with a ``click track,'' an electronic pulse designed to keep drummers This is a list of drummers, mostly in the fields of metal, rock, and jazz.

``I've seen adults cry when they had to play along with one of those things,'' the bassist joked.
