SUGARLOAF/USA SETS ALL-TIME HOLIDAY RECORD

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sugarloaf/USA broke its own all-time record for skier visits and revenues during the recent Christmas/Hanukkah/New Year's holiday period, with dramatic increases in all areas of the resort operation. Revenues are up by 17 percent, and skier visits are up by 12 percent over the same nine-day period last year from Dec. 25 through Jan. 3. Of the skiers at Sugarloaf/USA this past week, 45 percent have never skied at the Maine resort before.
Year-to-date, Sugarloaf/USA has seen increases of 39 percent in skier visits and 26 percent in revenues, and lodging reservations for the season are tracking 62 percent ahead of last year. The volume of calls to the 800 reservations line is up by 41 percent.
"We attribute these impressive increases to the new operating strategies which focus on quality snow and quality service," stated Warren Cook, President of Sugarloaf Mountain Corporation, and the major owner of the resort. "Over the past six seasons, we've improved every aspect of our operation and increased our marketing efforts, and each year more and more skiers are experiencing the new Sugarloaf. While others in New England had rain over the holidays, we received some snow which mixed with the freezing precipitation to create a nice groomed surface. So, quite frankly, the best skiing in New England is now here at Sugarloaf. It's rewarding to see how the skiers are voting with their feet...and their skis."
Last year was a record year for the holiday vacation period with increases of 25 percent compared to the previous year's holiday period. The increases can be attributed to the 13 million dollar investment in snowmaking over the past six years, which has created the most modern, high-pressure snowmaking system in North America. Sugarloaf/USA is also at the forefront of grooming technology with the newest fleet of grooming machines in the country and a team of veteran grooming machine operators who have received extensive training from the top groomers in the world.
The resort has also created Sugarloaf University, a curriculum of intensive employee training in customer service skills which has earned Sugarloaf the number one rating for customer service in national reader surveys in both Ski and Snow Country magazines. Also to continually improve and enhance its resort experience, an entertainment program of top name performers for the apres'-ski hours has been implemented with major concerts for adults and children, and nightly entertainment for kids of all ages. These activities have added many options in addition to the skiing for vacationers at the resort.
The Ski School showed significant increases over the holiday period where they instructed record numbers of adults and juniors. The Ski Shop and the Sugartree Sports and Fitness Club both set records, as well.
