SUBSTANCE-ABUSE INTERVENTION TO BE DISCUSSED.

Byline: Daily News

VALENCIA - The intervention process for drug and alcohol abusers will be the topic of a discussion Wednesday at the Valencia Recovery Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Guest speakers Cary Quashen, president of ACTION, a program for addicts, and Peter Gallway, the center's program director, will discuss the intervention process and demonstrate the technique.

The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the center, 23845 W. McBean Parkway, Information is available by calling (661) 253-8756.

``The structured intervention is not a new idea,'' Quashen said, noting it was introduced 25 years ago. ``Intervention works through care and concern coupled with scientific evidence that moves a person to accept both the realities of his or her condition as well as the help needed to manage it.''

Intervention forces alcoholics and drug addicts to face the consequences of their addiction, he said.

Intervention involves family and friends - those affected by addiction - Gallway said.

``Intervention is when those closest to the addict Any individual who habitually uses any narcotic drug so as to endanger the public morals, health, safety, or welfare, or who is so drawn to the use of such narcotic drugs as to have lost the power of self-control with reference to his or her drug use.  come together to say they cannot remain silent any longer, that they care too much to witness the destruction of the person they love,'' Gallway said. ``In the formal intervention process, significant others express just how much they care, as well as the bottom lines they will no longer tolerate.''

The technique involves a facilitator - a trained intervention specialist - who lays out an immediate plan for treatment. It is the process of presenting reality to addicts who are in denial in denial Psychiatry To be in a state of denying the existence or effects of an ego defense mechanism. See Denial. , Gallway said. The intervention is designed to help the addict seek treatment.
