 CHERRY HILL, N.J., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc.

in March posted its best overall sales month since July 1991 with total unit sales of 10,482.
 Although that is down about 8 percent from last year's volume, the company actually posted an increase of more than 14 percent in retail sales.
 "Our efforts to scale back on fleet sales was a conscious one which will allow us to concentrate on more profitable retail sales," said Tom Gibson, Subaru's president and chief operating officer. So far this year, the company has sold less than 2,000 fleet vehicles vs. more than 5,500 for the same period last year, for an overall reduction of nearly 65 percent.
 March retail sales of the Legacy line, its compact car which is the company's mainstay, recorded its best month since September 1990. The company also posted more than 6,500 domestic sales for March, a 42 percent gain and its best month since production began at its U.S. assembly plant in September of 1989. Sales of the Subaru SVX, the luxury performance coupe which was introduced in September of last year, also logged its highest volume since the vehicle's introduction.
 "We believe these are encouraging signs that the Subaru value story is not only reaching our target audiences, but actually taking hold," offered Gibson. "This is particularly encouraging since our new advertising campaign and our overall marketing efforts have just kicked into high gear in the past two months."
