SUBARU CHAIRMAN NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT TEAM
 CHERRY HILL, N.J., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America's

Chairman Takeshi Higurashi today introduced the company's new executive management team and Subaru's three-point plan to expand the momentum of its presence in the U.S. market. Subaru's three-point plan supports parent Fuji Heavy Industries' five-phase restructuring plan to restore Fuji and its subsidiaries to profitability over the mid-term period concluding 1993.
The new management team, announced in response to the departure of SOA President Thomas Gibson, will be comprised of Takeshi Higurashi, chairman and CEO; and George Muller and Charles Worrell, who have both become executive vice presidents sharing the responsibilities of chief operating officer.
Both Muller and Worrell are veterans of the Subaru management ranks and have been instrumental in guiding SOA to a 10+ percent retail sales gain in the first seven months of 1992. For this same period, the company also has posted a sales increase of nearly 25 percent in its top 26 markets, which account for nearly 60 percent of its total sales. Over the last year, SOA has reformulated its marketing approach to concentrate more on its core markets.
"By restructuring Subaru more horizontally and placing its leadership in the hands of some of our best talent, we are positioning the company to become even more competitive and responsive to the needs of our dealers and customers," said Higurashi, who leads the new management team. "Through the implementation of a three-point plan, we will position Subaru as one of the leading marketers of automotive technology and value," he continued.
According to Higurashi, the three-point plan will:
-- Build brand image to the point where Subaru becomes synonymous with high value and technology in the auto industry. This will be accomplished by leveraging Subaru's historical strengths as a niche player with more tactical strategies and integrated marketing efforts.
-- Focus on the introduction of additional competitive products, beginning with a new subcompact.
-- Further strengthen its customer service orientation.
Under the new organizational structure, a streamlined and more efficient operation will be achieved and promote more immediate decision-making and foster better internal and external communication.
Muller, who has been with SOA for 13 years, will be responsible for all financial and support operations as well as the parts and service functions and Subaru's financing subsidiary, Subaru Financial Services.
Worrell, who has more than 30 years experience in the automotive industry, including 20 years with the Ford Motor Company, will be responsible for all marketing, sales, product planning and owner services at SOA.
Subaru of America, Inc. is the exclusive United States marketer of Subaru products manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd., of Japan. Headquartered in Cherry Hill, N.J., SOA markets its Justy, Loyale, Legacy and SVX and markets replacement parts and accessories through a network of company-owned and independent distributors who serve nearly 730 dealers nationwide.
