SUB seeks 7.9 percent spike in water rates.

SPRINGFIELD Springfield.

 - The Springfield Utility Board is looking to approve a 7.9 percent increase in residential water rates following a public hearing on Dec. 6.

The rate hike would take effect Jan. 1 and push the average residential customer's monthly bill to $16.34, an increase of $1.24.

SUB last increased residential water rates in February February: see month.  by 8.4 percent. The overall rate increase for all customers in February was 9.6 percent, the same overall rate increase proposed for January January: see month. .

Rising capital costs for maintenance and new construction across the utility's coverage area are driving the rate increase, said Jeff Nelson Jeff Nelson can refer to different people:

The utility's base charges for water use - $6.90 a month for most residential customers - will not change, Nelson said. The cost increases will be tied to consumption usage.

The public hearing on Dec. 6 will be held at 7 p.m. in the SUB Meeting Room, 223 A St., Suite F. Copies of materials in support of the rate increase can be reviewed in advance at the SUB office. Call 744-3779 for more information.
