STYLE > L.A. FASHION WEEK FASHION ROADKILL.Byline: >JENNY PETERS /SPYWITNESS We're sliding into home, and the Cleveland Indians are nowhere in sight. That's because while that dream team is fighting it out for a spot in the World Series, fashion mavens in Los Angeles have no idea that October means baseball to much of America. For here in La-La Land, October means it's Fashion Week, and nothing else matters. On Day 4 (of 5) of the Mercedes-Benz Spring 2008 Fashion Week, held at Smashbox Studios in Culver City (as well as tons of other tag-along venues all over town), there were bikinis that looked like lingerie, eco-friendly togs touted by green-loving beauties, and serious skid marks left by fashion victim models dressed in caution-sign couture who couldn't keep their feet on the catwalk. Just another day in the wacked-out world of Angeleno fashion, right? The irony of the Beach Bunny swimsuit show couldn't have been more obvious, as swimwear-model-turned-designer Angela Chittendon showed a line of suits that couldn't possibly be worn into the water. It was lingerie masquerading as outerwear once again (a continuing theme of this season's shows, it seems), with lacy tops that looked like bras and bottoms so delicate that even walking in them seemed a bit of a struggle for the buxom gals that strutted their stuff before a sweaty (was the air conditioning broken?) audience made up of more straight men than had been to all of the previous day's shows combined. Much more wearable were the Evidence of Evolution eco-friendly clothes shown by designers Andrew McCarthy and Ali Aborzi, whose significant other is actress/model Josie Maran. She first used her new line of organic cosmetics (known as Josie Maran Cosmetics) to create the show's "Bohemian Crusader" look, then took to the catwalk to show off their easy-to-wear organic cotton clothes, and was joined by actor Vincent Gallo, whose bright blue suit was a perfect contrast to his shaggy hair and beard. Being furry is all organic, dontcha know? "Entourage" hottie Adrian Grenier caused a stir in that front row, along with beauties Q'Orianka Kilcher and Vanessa A. Williams. Things got kinda crazy when Jeremy Scott's show capped off the night, as his female models played fashion victims, teetering down the runway on 5-inch black heels and wearing manhole-cover hats and tire-track face paint. Scott showed motifs of workboot footprints, tires, giant handprints and multicolored caution signs, done in silk caftans, one-piece bathing suits, micro minis, and strangely shapeless housedresses. The worst moment of Fashion Week occurred at his show, as one model just couldn't keep the teetering going, and skidded down to the floor, leaving black tracks across the ultra-white runway. And we just have to ask, who exactly would ever wear Scott's billowing black garbage-bag gown? It looked like something to put runway roadkill in, not something that any fashion-loving Angeleno would consider actually wearing! Swimwear from the Beach Bunny line, above and right, hardly seems ready for contact with water, let alone for actual swimming. Jeremy Scott's body-bag evening gown and tire-treaded streetwear have caused a stir for the wrong reasons. Notable spectators, far right, include Adrian Grenier and Q'Orianka Kilcher. >GETTY IMAGES |
