With that observation in mind, the first hour of the program focuses on teaching students methods and frameworks they can use to master different subjects. The second hour is devoted to one-on-one tutoring for math and science - subject areas where students need the most help. Although students are tired from summer school classes in the morning, they say they enjoy the afternoon enrichment program, which lasts from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. ``With other classes in school, you don't get that much attention from the teachers. There are 30 or 40 students in the class. You can't get individual attention,'' said Edwin Cruz, a Hoover High sophomore. ``Here they know your first and last name,'' said David Marroquin, another Hoover High sophomore. In addition to academic help, the Latino Student Initiative also serves as a support group of sorts for its members who have GPAs ranging from 1.5 to 3.5. During the school year, they meet once a month to discuss issues they face in school. Montoro also organizes field trips, with financial help from the Glendale Community Foundation, to universities and colleges to open students' eyes to future possibilities. Someone who cares deeply about the students, she is known to call home to report both the good and the bad. ``She cares a lot for us,'' said Salvador Sanabria, who signed up for the program two years ago because he was having trouble in math and biology. ``I started bad in my school year. Now I am doing better.'' During a recent lecture, Hoover High teacher Cynthia Oei taught students to identify the different kinds of questions posed in standardized tests A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1] - questions for which the answer is readily apparent in the text; questions that require synthesizing information to answer; and questions that can be answered without reading the text. If the students can tell which type of question they are being confronted with on a standardized test, Oei believes they will be able to save time and possibly do better. ``What I am trying to bring here is strategies. They can be used across the curriculum to be successful,'' she said. Although it's too early to tell the program's impact, Montoro has high hopes for her young charges. ``My honest expectation is all of them will go on to pursue some form of higher education,'' she said.
