STUDY DISMISSES NEED FOR DUMP IN WELDON CANYON\Shipping trash seen as option.

Dismissing any notion of a looming looming: see mirage.  trash crisis, a waste agency has concluded Ventura County does not need to build a new landfill at Weldon Canyon Weldon Canyon is a canyon in Los Angeles County, California, United States, through which Interstate 5 passes. The Old Road, now paralleled by I-5, opened on May 28, 1930 through the canyon as a bypass of the 1910 Newhall Tunnel.  or expand the existing Toland Road Landfill.

Instead of building a new dump, the West Ventura County Waste Management Authority said the region should turn to local recycling firms and ship leftover trash to the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Landfill or the Chiquita Canyon Landfill.

"There's no need for Weldon," said Fillmore Mayor Roger Campbell, a member of the West Ventura County Waste Management Authority. "There's no need for Toland expansion. There's a solution out there."

The authority, composed of west county city and county officials, has no direct power over the Weldon Canyon proposal or Toland Road expansion. Its findings serve only as recommendations.

The authority said the west county could ship trash to the Gold Coast recycling and transfer station in Ventura and to the Del Norte Del Norte can refer to multiple things:
  • Del Norte County, California
  • Del Norte, Colorado
 facility in Oxnard.

After the recyclable materials are removed, the authority said, the remaining trash could be buried in the Simi Valley Landfill or Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County. It concluded that there is no need for another local landfill or for hauling trash out of the county by rail.

The West Ventura County Waste Management Authority reached its conclusion after commissioning a consultant's report to examine trash disposal options. But on the orders of the authority, the study by the firm Hilton, Farnkopf & Hobson did not examine the Weldon Canyon or Toland Road options.

The county is searching for ways to dispose of To determine the fate of; to exercise the power of control over; to fix the condition, application, employment, etc. of; to direct or assign for a use.

Del Mar-based Taconic Resources hopes to revive the stalled proposal for a landfill in Weldon Canyon between Ojai and Ventura. The company and its local supporters have placed an initiative on the March ballot asking voters to support developing a landfill in the canyon.

Meanwhile, the Ventura Regional Sanitation District hopes to expand the Toland Road Landfill between Fillmore and Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. . The sanitation district wants to expand the daily capacity of the landfill from the current 135 tons per day up to 1,500 tons per day.
